NEW ZEALAND’S GOVERNOR.
fßr Thubqbash.l
[FBOM THE “FBBBS.”] WELLINGTON, September 5. A curious rumour comes from Auckland to-night. It is said that Sir G. Grey’,* sudden departure from Wellington was duo to his intention to leave for England by next mail steamer. It is further alleged that Mr Mhcardrew and other members of the socalled “ Great Liberal Party ” some time ogo addressed a letter to Mr Gladstone urging tho desirableness of Sir G. Grey being appointed the next Governor of New Zealand, it being understood that Sir Arthur Gordon’s departure is final, and as Sir O. Grey’s appointment might tend to smooth away and finally settle all remaining Native difficulties. Tho story further goes that a reply has been received from Mr Gladstone, couched in somewhat ambiguous language, but conveying in vague diplomatic terms the idea that tho English Government is not unfavourably disposed towards the suggestion. I give this singular story for what it is worth, but it certainly reaches me on what appears good authority, and with a strong air of truthfulness.
