Municipal—The names of Messrs Boiewarne, Gapes, and D. Reese are mentioned as probable candidates for Christchurch municipal honors. For Sydenham, Messrs Largdown and HallofLr themselves for re-election. Two new candidates are also named, viz., Messrs B. Dawson and A. Ashworth.

Found —The police want on owner for a hand bell recently found on a prisoner. Bast Belt Wesleyan Chuboh —The Rev. J. Smalley will deliver his popular lecture on “Egypt” in the above church on Friday evening next. The proceeds are in aid of the building fund. The Thamwat,—lt is notified that after to-day the trams on the Ferry road line will only run as far a* St. Peter’s Church, til the neccsiary works are completed. Ashbubton. —The following ware nominated to day as candidates for election to fill three vacancies in the Borough Council: —A. Orr, W. H. Collins, J. B. Buchanan, S. B. Nilaon, Q. Parkar, J. O. Dolman. A O.F. —Conrt Thistle of the Forest held its usual fortnightly meeting in St. Saviour’s schoolroom, Sydenham, last evening. Con■iderirg there was some very important buainets tu transact, there was not as good an attendance as was desired. The discussion re joining the dispensary was adjonrnad to next coart night. A committee was also appointed to revise the by-laws of the court, after which the court was closed by 0.8. Bro. Haig.

Candidates yob Municipal Globy.— Offices of honor do not appear to go a-begging in Port. There are three vacancies for the Borough Council, and the following to-day were nominated :—Bryan, Weybourne, John G-. Fyfe, Alexander Joyce, W. Hollies, W. Hildyard, Q-. L\. Haxell, D. Dimond, and William Holmes, The election takes place on the 14th instant.

The Licensing Aoi I .— At the meeting of the Lyttelton Licensing Oommiitee yesterday the chairman called publioana’ attention to the decieion given by Mr Oarew, R.M-, at Duredin, that the ordinary license did not empower the committee to grant extension of hours for dinners and so forth, as had been supposed, but the difficulty could be met by the 128th clause. Mr Webb, as a member of the committee, said he regretted to hoar that young men were allowed to be in hotels playing cards all night. Mr J. W. Smith took exception to such a remark falling from the committee without proof being brought. He was prepared to decide upon evidence brought, whether in reference to charges against licensees or on applications for midnight extensions. Lyttelton B M. Coubt. —Mr J. Ollivier, 8.M., disposed of the following eases at this Court this morning -A fine of 20s was paid by the landlord of the Canterbury Hotel. Alexander Gordon charged Thomas Newton with using threatening language towards him. Mr Nalder appeared to prosecute. The parties were neignbors, but from the statement made by the complainant that he had to keep a dog to watch him and had to sit up at night on guard for him, they were very unceighborly. The defendant esked to have the case ad jammed to allow him to get a lawyer, but the Bench refused The complainant, amongst other things, informed the Court that he had to look np his wood, coal, and water. The Bench heard a lot of evidence of this sort, and ordered defendant to find sureties, himself in £SO, and in two furtherjsurcties of £25 each. Baxter re George, £3 5s ; immediate order of judgment made. Rouse y Morton, claim £2 10s; judgment by default. Same v Lindsay, claim £4 17s, Same v Geo. Graham, claim £5; immediate judgment granted, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. Same re J. Gardner, claim £l3 7s fid; judgment for plaintiff; Barr v Union Steamship Company; Mr Slater for plaintiff, Mr Nalder for defendant; claim £3O 8s 3d. Judgment for defendants. Licensing Disteicts, —At the meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christchurch West to-day, it was mentioned that a proposition was before them to recommend the alteration of the names of the licensing districts to those of the divisions of the city for municipal purposes. Snoh an alteration would be a great public convenience, and it is satisfactory to be able to record that the Committee have agreed to make the recommendation.

Sydenham Peesbyteeian Church. —A sacred concert will be given in tho above church to-morrow evening, in aid of the Sunday school library and choir funds. Timabtj Sobeiety. —A comparative statement of tho arrests made at Timaru for drunkenness is given as follows :—During June, July and August of la-t year the aarestp amounted to fifty-four. In the corresponding period this year they wore seventyfour.

Ownbb Wanted. —The police are anxious to hear from the owner of a carriage rug, which was found with a drunken man, who was asleep, on Monday night, in the porch at the entrance to the house of Dr. Deamer, in Armagh street. The rug is described as a sheepskin dyed majonta or purple. Eaiapoi Bobough Council. — Messrs Champion, Feldwick, Parnham and Stanton have been nominatsd as candidates to fill the three vacancies in the Kaiapoi Borough Council. The poll takes place on the 14^. Yalbdictoby. —At Ashley Bank last evening a largely attended dinner was given to Mr J. A. Cunningham, and an illuminated address presented to him, acknowledging his public services and the esleem and regret felt by the residents on his leaving for Napier. Podltbt Association. The annual general meeting of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society will be held at the Shades to-morrow evening. Municipal Elections.— The nominations for the vacancies in the City and St. Albans Councils close to-morrow at noon. That for the vacancy in the South east ward, caused by the resignation of Mr C. P. Halbert, will close on the 15th iastant, the poll being fixed for the 27th.

Cheistchubch Hospital. The bouse steward of Christchurch Hospital begs to acknowledge, with thanks, tie receipt of a quantity of flowers for the patients, from Mrs H. B. Sorensen.

Lyttelton Sobbiety. —The chairman of the Lyttelton Licensing Committee sends the following :—Drunks arretted at Lyttelton— July—August, 1831, 24; July, 1881—June, 1882, 129; July August, 1882, 15. Decrease ticca 10 o’clock closing, as compared with corresponding period, 1881, 374 per cent. Ditto, compared with average (10J per month) of preceding twelve months, 30| per cent. A Doubtful Boundaey.—At the usual meeting of the Waimakariri Harbor Board on Monday, it cropped up that although the Board has been in existence some six years, tho extent of its jurisdiction has not been clearly defined. It was stated to be a moot point between the members whether the gowers of the Board extended to a. mile below the bridge at Zaiapoi or out to sea.

Pis bon Match at Ashburton .- On Monday afternoon a pigeon match for a sweepstake took place in the_ river bed, among.t the competitors being Messrs Orawloy, Oorbott, and Prisby. The competitors proved such accurate marksmen that four ties resulted, and for the want of more birds to shoot at the match was drawn. Tub Windmilh Bo ad BTbk.—The insurances on the house in the Windmill load destroyed by fire on Monday night last, are as fallows ; —New Zealand Insurance Office, £200; South Bri'ish Insurance Office, £250. There is no clue to the cause of the fire. Eanqiora Borough Council.. —The following gentlemen were nominated yesterday to fill the vacancies in this Council, caused by the retirement of Messrs Ivory, White, and Stephens, viz., A. Ivory, Geo. Cone, W. White, and Solomon Stephens. The polling will take place on the 14th inst. Inquest.—An inquiry touching the death of James Sorvis, who died in the Hospital from injuries sustained at the Styx mill whilst killing a hog, the particulars of which have been already reported, was hold yesterday at 3 p.m. Dr. Bobinson stated the cause of death, and the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death.”

Narrow Escape —Mr G. M. Thomson, of the Dunedin High School Beotory (says the “Star”), had his left foot injured while superintending the School Cadets firing at the Peliohet Bay range on Saturday. He was at the target, and before he could get out of the way one of tho lads fired. The ball struck the ground and splintered, several of the pieces entering into Mr Thomson's foot. Drs. Conghtrey and Brown attended to Mr Thomson, who will be prevented from attending to his scholastic duties for a few days.
