ST. ALBANS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the above Council was held last evening in the Borough Council Chambers at 7.30, Present—His Worship the Mayor. Ors. .Gull, Dickinson, Turner, Mann, Money and Matson. The works committee's report was reid, which stated—(l.) That the proposed widening of the streets and roads of the Borough found general favor. Also, that it was thought advisable to call a public meeting of :the burgesses to affirm or veto same. (2) That it was considered advisable to erect name plates at the corners of the various streets and roads of the borough. The consideration of clause 1 was deferred. Clause 2 was referred to the works committee with power to act. Leave of absence for the evening was granted to Or. Blakiston, and a month’s absence was given to Cr. Moor on the score of ill-health.

The finance committee reported that the receipts of the past fortnight were £426 16j 3d, the present Or. balance at the Bank being £331 15j 3d, which would be reduced to £63 Is 2d, by accounts proposed for payment amounting to £258 14s Id. The report was received and adopted. Letter* were road :

From Mr J. F. Ward, acknowledging his appointment as Boturuing Officer for the St. Albans District, and encloiiag the customary declaration.

The Avon Boad Board wrote, enclosing a cheque for £3OO, being a portion of the proceeds of sale of reserves, with a promise that the balance will be paid after the next meeting of the Board. The secretary to the Drainage Board wrote, enclosing copies of resolutions passed at the recent conference of local bodies, re the Board of Health.—Consideration deferred. Mr W. Stringer wrote on behalf of the owners of the fee simple of the Oarlton Mill road, protesting against the proposed widening of the road by the Council, or any action derogatory to their interests j also, calling the Council’s attention to the fact that it has no title to the said road. -

The Mayor said this question had arisen out of a misunderstanding of the Wakefield Boad Alteration Ordinance, No. 6, Sess. 2, 1854. (Ordinance read). The question was had the conditions set forth with reference to the Chief Surveyor’s certificate been complied with or not when the road was altered. Or. Turner said even if not the Oonnoil possessed a yet more valuable road close alongside the north bank of the river, that only needed xe-opening, and in lieu of which the present road was given by the late B. J. Wakefield. The Mayor was afraid the Helmore Ordinance interfered with that at a certain point. Farther consideration of the matter was held over.

The slaughter-house by-law was ordered to be gazetted, and Mr W. F, Beatson was appointed inspector thereunder. The Council then adjourned.
