Further serious rioting took place in Dublin last evening, and some difficulty was experienced in restoring order. The military were again called ont to clear the streets, and in several cases were compelled to charge the moh with fixed bayonets. [PBB PBHBB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, September 4. Mr O. 6. Stone was elected director of the Mutual Insurance Company. Between 70,000 and 80,000 shares have been taken up, Henry Smith has been arrested and remanded for feloniously assaulting a girl named Annie Hutcheson, In regard to the fire last night in Walker’s block, additional insurances are : —Murphy, £2OO in the Norwich Union 5 Ambrose and English, £SO. The Colonial bad £175 reinsured. The surgeons have extracted the bullet from Toove’s skull. He remains in pretty much the same state as when he first attempted suicide. Sergeant Major Pardy has returned from Cambridge, where he has investigated the circumstances connected with the late poisoning case. Mr Wm. Walters, the well-known sportsman and horse breeder, died to-night, at the age of fifty-four. He was an old col mist of forty years standing. WELLINGTON, September 4, A fine sample of cork, grown in New Zealand, hss been forwarded to Wellington Museum by Judge Gillies. Further evidence wes taken in the hospital enquiry to-day. An adjournment was made until to-morrow, when it is expected it will be terminated. The theatre was crowded all last week to witness the performance of “ The World.” Owing to the great success, “The World” season has been extended three nights. « New Babylon ” succeeding it on Thursday. TIMABU, September 4. At the inquest on Mr B. H. Tate to-day, the verdict returned was, “That the deceased died from a fit of serous apoplexy,” The nomination of borough councillors was hold to-day, and exceptional interest was taken in it, as this waa the first election since the borough was divided into wards. In all twenty two candidates were nominated for the twelve seals. During the last week nearly forty feet of solid concrete work of breakwater was completed, and the work is progressing very rapidly. An additional 220 feet of the wooden wharf will be finished in about a fortnight. The solid concrete work now extends about 1200 feat seawards, with twentyfour feet at dead low spring tides at the outer end. It is progress! g at the rate of about sixty feet per month. DUNEDIN, September 4. The leading members of the legal profession in Dunedin, who have been consulted on the subject, have, in opposition to the opinion just given by the Solicitor-General, advised that the license fees under the Licensing Act and Dog Begistration Act are payable to County Councils, and not to Town Boards. At the Dunedin South licensing meeting to-day, the police brought the case of Scott, of the Newmarket Hotel, under notice. It will be remembered that judgment was given against him in the Besident Magistrate’s Court on a “lambing down” case. The committee decided that they could not take cognisance of the matter, at any rate until a renewal was applied for. A fresh match, the same distance, and for the same money, has been arranged between Burke and O’Connor, to take place on Saturday, the 16.. h inat. Burke intimates that he will retire from pedestrian contests after this event. A private cablegram received here to-day states that the following horses will probably face the starter for the Metropolitan Stakes to be run to-morrow : —Sting, Qudaiz, Britisher, Lord Burleigh, Gipsy Cooper, Prima Donna, Barber, Strathearn, Kingsworth, Prootor, Lord Orville, Harebell, Sweet William, Comet, Wostbury, Oreswick, Brian Born, Masquerade, Suwarrow, Stella, Brunette.
INVERCARGILL, September 4. The Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting held to-day, considered the proposal of the Dunedin Chamber re the direct steam service subsidy, and resolved on an amendment—- “ That this Chamber is of opmion that a subsidy of £3O,(XX) should be offered for on effeient service,’’ as against the motion to the effect that the Chamber is of opinion that the present and prospective trade offers sufll ciont inducement to steamship owners without subsidy
