This match took place on Saturday on the greuad of the latter. Play was commenced by Tucker kicking off for Merivale against the wind, at about three o’clock. The Mcri vale quickly rushed it up, but a good run by lies, well becked up by Allardyce, relieved the Sydenham goal from danger. Ho score resulted in this spell. Merivale, with the wind, iu the second spell penned the Sydenham, but failed to score, although they forced their opponents down several times. The third -spell was now started, and Sydenham worked together with a will, and Beare getting the ball made a good pot at goal, but. it fell short into A. Scrimshaw’s arms, who failed to hold it, and Grantham rushing the ball secured a try, which the Merivale captain,, H. Lowry, objected to, but both umpires ruled against him. Ho showed very bod taste by calling his msn off the field. A delay now occurred, but Garrard subsequently brought all the men back, with the exception of Alfred Gapes -nd Lowry (captain), a fact which was recognised by tte spectators in a proper manner, such conduct on the part of a captain being very reprehensible. One substitute was found in McGregor, who played splendidly. Returning to the try Robinson took it, but failed to improve on it. The ball was again brought into play, and Sydenham rushed it down again, and Allardyce made a good attempt at a kick at goal, the ball just going under the bar. The last spell was now started. Sydenham again rushed it down into their opponents, and lies getting hold of the ball secured another try, which Robinson converted into a goal. Tucker kicked off, and Merivale rushed it down. McGregor secured the only score for Merivale. Time was now called, leaving Sydenham victors by one goal and one try to one try. For Merivale 1 Francis, Tucker, Scrimshaw (backs), and Arthur Gapes, Garrard, and McGregor (forwards), worked very hard, wh la for Sydenham lies, Allardyce, and Newman (backs), and Robinson, Jackson, and Bruce (forwards), rendered themselves very conspicuous.
