At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerca to-day, the following motions were passed—" That this Chamber has learnt with surprise and regret that the subsidy of £40,000 proposes by the Government for the establishment of a direct steam service between Great Britain and New Zealand was reduced by the House of Bepresentatives to £20,000. That these resolutions be forwarded by telegraph to the Hon. the Treasurer and the city members, and that the Otago members be requested to support the proposal. That a copy of these resolutions be telegraphed to the Canterbury and Inveroargill Chambers of Commerce inviting their 00-operation." A resolution was also proposed asking the Hon.
