RAILWAY TARIFF.
The following letter has been reoeived by J. B. Campbell, Esq., in reply to a letter forwarded to Sir John Hall, with resolutions passed at a publio meeting held at Southbridge, re the reduction of railway tariff : Wellington, 28th August, 1882. Sir,—l beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th inat., forwarding resolutions agreed to at a publio meeting at Southbridge, urging a reduction in the railway charges upon produce, general merchandise, and stock, and also in passenger fares. I shall have much pleasure in bringing these resolutions under the notice of the Government, and requesting that very favourable consideration may be given to them. You are probably aware that the whole question of the railway rates has been pressed on the attention of the Government by members representing Canterbury constituencies. Ministers have promised that the subj-tot shall be carefully gone iuto when the conclusion of their sessional labours will render it possible for them to do so, and I have no doubt that the steps which have been taken will lead to substantial results. This will not, however, prevent me dealing with the resolutions received through you in the manner already stated.
I am, &c, John Hall. J. B. Campbell, Esq., Southbridge.
