The Burdett-Howe Company opened at the Opera House with “ True to the Core.” There was a good house. Sergeant MoGoverin went to Alexandra, and has examined Tu Tawhaio' and the ground where Barlow was fired at. MoGoverin is of opinion that there is no doubt that an assassination was attempted. The Natives, on tho other hand, declare that such oould not have been the case, a* no one will acknowledge having fired the shots. The examination of Barlow’s clothing sustains Mr McQoverin’s opinion. Barlo w will not go to tho Thames with Kohler, but intends settling down permanently, after his recent experience, at Mancare. GREYMOUTH, August 31. The vital statistics for August—Fourteen births, six deaths, one marriage. Customs receipts for August, £2968 ; corresponding month last year, £3077 ; gold duty, £829 : beer duty excise, £36 9s 9d. TIM ABU, August 31. Mr Edward H. Tate, land and commission agent, of Timarn, is missing. Ho left the office yesterday morning, saying he would be back in an hour. He was seen later on in the neighborhood of Saltwater Creek, about two miles south of the town, and has not since been heard of, although search parties have been out all day. It is feared something has happened to him. Tho vital statistics for Timarn for August are —forty-four births, nine deaths, four marriages. Tho easterns revenue is £1687 6s 9d, as against £2686 9s 5d for the corresponding month last year. OAMAR J, August 31. The vital statistics for Oamaru for the month of August are : —Births 44, deaths 3, marriages 2. The total amount of Customs revenue collected at Oamaru during this month of August was £1450 17s lid. The amount received for tho same period last year was £1515 16s lOd. The Borough Council has decided to ask tho ratepayers to sanction tho borrowing of £14,000 to lay another main from the reservoir to supply the demands for motive power. The revenue derivable will be about £I6OO, and the interest payable will be about £BOO. The requests for water for motive power have outgrown the present service. DUNEDIN, August 31. A crowbar he had been using penetrated completely through a portion of his body near the groin, inflicting a wound which it is a miracle did not at once prove fatal. He is progressing favorably. An important sale of runs took place today by the Government auctioneer. The annual rental realised as the result of the sale was £9OOO or on an average of 81 par acre, which is about threo_ times the ameunt they are at present bringing in. The runs were educational reserves, and the sale was on behalf of the School Commissioners of Ois-go and tho High Schools Board ol Governors. ...
