THE WAR IN EGYPT.
BY CABLE. [eeutbe’s TELEGRAMS. 1 ALEXANDRIA, August 28. The Bedouins are massing in the neighborhood of this city, and their number is daily increasing. They are now throwing np entrenchments near Fort Mex. No further movement of importance has yet been made by the forces of Sir Garnet Wolseley. The main body of the first division is still in the neighborhood of Ramses. Sir Garnet reports that the result of the fighting which took place on Thursday and Friday at Damemel, Nagfar and Dom, and the defeat of the enemy at Ramses have been understated. It has now been ascertained that the rebels fled in disorder towards Zagazig, leaving everything in the hands of the British.
[“ AGE ” SPECIAL.] August 28, 5.48 p m. The chief officers of Arabi’s staff have bean captured. The whole of the work in connection with repairing the Suez-Ismailia railway is now completed. It is intended to overflow Lake Mareotis or Marria, a salt lake situated in the North of Egypt, extending southward from the City of Alexandria, and separated from the Mediterranean on the north side by a narrow isthmus of sand. The passage by which the sea found its way into the lake was opened by the English during the war between England and France in 1801, hut was subsequently closed by Mehemet Ali, and since then it has been a mere marsh. The dimensions of the lake are about twenty-seven miles long, and twenty-five miles broad.
