CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, August 28. [Before J. Ollivier, Ekq,, R.M.J Dbunkbhnbbs. —For this offence, Margaret Ellison was fined 6s. For first offences, three men were fined each 5?, all with the usual alternatives in default.
YagbAhts. —lsrael Luke and Ellen Danby, alias Farkerson, were charged with being found on Sunday night on the premises of J. Lee, Oxford terrace. They were also charged with haying used obscene language in a thoroughfare. Tho particulars of these oases as given by the witnesses were quite inaudible at the reporters’ table. The accused were sent to prison each for one month, with hard labor.
Neglected Child. —Catherine Paul, aged five years, having been proved to be the child of abandoned parents, was committed to Burnham School for seven years, to be brought up in the religion of the Church of England. Btbaliko a Watch. James Keafe, arrested at Ashburton, was charged with stealing a watch valued at £9l7s 6d, the property of Wm. Malians. Sergeant Mason stated that tho owner of the watch was away at the West Coast, and the prisoner was remanded for eight clear days. Assault. —Charles Hulston was charged with assaulting Philip Dale on August 24th. Mr Stringer appeared for plaintiff ; Mr Joyce for defendant. Plaintiff deposed that in consequence of a conversation about the purchase of a section, defendant attacked and beat him, finally knocking him down, and so injuring him as to disable him from work ever since. The parties are employed at Heymanson, Low and Co.’s boot factory, and the assault took place there on a staircase. The defence was that plaintiff had made certain reflections on the business character of of defendant, and when called on for an explanation endeavored to throw defendant down stairs. A large number of witnesses were called on both sides. Finally, his Worship said there had been a most dastardly and cowardly assault. Fined £2, cos' sof Court, expenses of three witnesses, doctor’s fee and solicitor’s fee.
Miscellaneous. —W. H. Orchard, for neglecting to keep a light burning before his licensed house, Collins’ Hotel (two informations), was fined 20s. Sam Lacy, for allowing a horse to wander, was fined 10s. Wm. Mole, for allowing a goat to wander, was fined 5 1. Wm. Clark, for driving cattle through Kilmoro street in the daytime, was fined 10j. F. Mulholland, for having horses at large, was fined 10s. Wm. Bonntree, for keeping an unregistered; dog, was fined 10s, George Qleeson and Wm, O’Connor were charged with fighting at the corner of Colombo and Gloucester atreata on the night of August I7vh, The evidence showed that Gleeson was the aggressor ; he was fined £l. O’Connor was discharged. Several oases of default in contributions to tho support of children at Burnham were dealt with :—May Mitchell, in arrears £lO, was sent to gaol for one month; Jno. Gilbert, in arrear £8 15s, case postponed t’ll 30:h inst ; Geo. Wadsworth, in arrears £5. paid £2 and his case was adjourned for four weeks. Margaret BVwke, for using abusive and threatening language to Selina J. Wage tuff, was fined £2, and warned that a repetition of the offence would entail more serious consequences. An order was made granting to C. A. Treloar protection of her earnings again it her husband, Thos. Treloar, on the ground of his adultery. He did not appear, Mrs Treloar also obtained the legal custody of her two children, whom ahe has boon supporting.
