(PKB PBMS ASSOOIATIOS.J WANGANUI, August 28. A petition to the Queen is in course of signature by old soldiers, complaining of unfair treatment by the Government in regard to land claims. The petition will be forwarded Home by next mail. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 28, A half-decked fishing boat, with four tons of cargo for Mckau, on crossing the bar at that place, was thrown npon the rooks of the South Head, and was quickly broken up, the sea being heavy. The whole of the cargo, valued at £l5O, was lost. All the crew were saved. A second boat, with timber, which left Waitara on Friday, has not been heard of, and great anxiety is felt for her safety. WELLINGTON, August 28. A fisherman named Thomas Howson was drowned at Oheronga Bay, Terawhiti, on Saturday. He, along with his mate, was attempting to secure gill nets, when the boat capsized. The latter clang to the boat, and was driven ashore. Hewson managed to secure the mast, but became exhausted and sank. His body was recovered. An inquest will he held. WEBTFOET, August 28. The Ada C. Owen was successfully floated last night with the assistance of the steamers Beautiful Star and Result. AEAROA, August 28. A daring attempt was made to burn down Grange’s Bruce’s Hotel, the Criterion Hotel, and Bayley’s Hotel at about two o’clock this morning. Grange’s and the Criterion wore saved with difficulty, but Bayley’s was burnt to the ground. Portions of goree were found at each building, proving it to be the work of an incendiary. There is no clue as to the person or persons st present. Mr Bayley is a heavy loser. 1 DUNEDIN, August 28. In the Divorce Court Judge Williams granted a rule nisi for a dissolution of marriage on the petition of Grace MoNab Smurt, wife of Thomas Kendall Suart. No .appearance of the respondent. He married petitioner in 1873 for her money, and finding it looked up, commenced a course of illtreatment. After this a deed of separation via drawn up, petitioner getting rid of her husband by giving him £4OO a'tcr which hs went to Invercargill, and there led ■ life of immorality, leading to .the present proceed-

One of the truck* was loaded with timber, which projected over the end, and it ie mppoeed MoKiieook’s head was cruehed between the end of the timber and the other truck.
INYBBOARGILL, August 28.
A man named Anderson, a felmonger, while riding from Biverina to Thornbury, was thrown from hia horse and killed.
Christina Uanseu, the young woman whose leg was recently amputated consequent on injuries received on the tramway, died in the Hospital yesterday.
