[PBKSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] t AUCKLAND, August 24. Dr. Horne, JP, was committed to the Lunatic Asylum. The Mayor entertained the officers of the Tsukuba, councillors, and other citizens at a dinner party at his residence. The Tsnknba takes a quantity of Bay coal. Lirrikinism is increasing, and several cases have occurred lately. WELLINGTON, August 24. The hospital inquiry was continued to-day, and adjourned until Monday, when the evidence of Drs. Gillon (resident surgeon) and Oollins will be taken.
Mr D. F. Higginson, engineer of the Wellington and Manawatu Bailway Company, has been awarded a “ Telford premium ” by the Institute of Civil Engineers, London, for his paper on the “ Kawarau Suspension Bridge,” recently designed and constructed by him for the Lake County Council. The Otago bridge is a very handsome structure, crossing a river in one span of 300 ft, at an elevation of 140tt obove the water, and was designed to be made of material which could bo easily end cheaply placed on the spot far in the interior, and at the same time secure strength and durability, NELSON, August 24.
Mr J. Kerr left for Christchurch, in the Hawea, this afternoon, taking Irvington and three other American horses and two mares, which ho lately brought from America. WE 3TPOBT, August 24.
The steamer Beautiful Star is still aground on the north spit. It is impossible and unsafe to render assistance b Z . another steamer. There is a possibility of her getting off tomorrow morning.

By the mail to-day the “ Timarn Herald” received a letter from the owners of the wrecked ship Benvenue, in Glasgow, advising a subscription of £IOO to the wreck relief fund,
DUNEDIN, August 24.
The dredge has been employed continuously on the bar this week, which is the longest spell she has had. The soundings yesterday showed from 19ft to 23tt at low water.
The Temperance Hall Company have passed a resolution to sell their property, the new public halls recently built, including the Garrison and Lyceum Halls, having taken a great part of the letting custom. Sparrow and Co. have oasfcjiron columns for Watson’s new hotel which will each weigh 2 tons 15 owt. They are 22in in diameter and 14ft 6in high and 2in thick. They are very creditable as specimens of local foundry work. The snow fall in the interior this winter is said to have been the heaviest for years, and a very large quantity remains on the ranges in some places.
