The cricket match at Taunton between the Somersetshire eleven and the Australians has resulted in a victory for the latter by one innings with 19 runs to spare. The August-September series of wool sales commenced to-day. The opening catalogue comprised 6800 bales, for which a fair competition was experienced. Faulty and scoured were rather neglected. Good qualities are worth about the same as at the close of last sales. For crossbreds and for inferior and faulty wools of all descriptions, prices have been barely maintained.

Consols are unchanged at 99£. New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—Five Per Cent. 10-40 Loan, 107 i; Five Per Cent. 1889 Loan, 107 ; Four and a Half Per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, IOOf. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, is nnchanged, at 48s 6d ; and New Zealand ditto, at 475. Off the coast cargoes of Adelaide wheat are now quoted at 48s 6d, being an advance of 6d; Adelaide flour, 35s Australian tallow—Best beef, 44s 7d ; best mutton, 45s 6d. August 23. Ten Laud Leaguers have been arrested by the police, charged with the murder of a family at Mullaghadrnma on the 18 th instant. The information upon which the arrests have been made was furnished by an eye witness of the ontrage. [“ Argus” Specials.] LONDON, August 22, 5.53 p.m. Sales opened to-day. The balance of medium wools held over from last sales were catalogued. There was a full attendance of Home and foreign buyers, and the bidding was keen. All good wools realised the average of last sales. The quantity available was 360,000 hales. [“ AGE ” SPECIAL.] The Chinese Government have passed a resolution expressing regret at the action of Queensland in respect to Chinese immigration.
