Pbbbbhtations- Yesterday evening a very pleasant ceremony took place in connection with Dunstable House. Messrs O. S. Bell and A. Saarland, who have been for many yean connected with the establishment, being about to commence business on their own account in Christchurch, were invited by their fellow employees to an evening party, which was held in the carpet warehouse. During the eve ing Mr Bundle, on behalf of the subscribers and as a mark of the esteem and respect felt for Messrs Shsrland and Bell, presented each of the gentlemen with a handsome timepiece bearing a suitable inscription. In making the presentation, Mr Bundle spake of the hign appreciation entertained by all in the establishment for Messrs Sharland aid Bell, and their wish that in their new venture they would achieve every sueosss.

For some time past it has in plaoes been little bettor than a quagmire, and, what ia still more serious, the school committee have no funds they oan spare towards putting it in order. The Board of Bduoation lately granted £6; and, as the Lyttelton Naval Brigade have used the yard for exercising in, the matter waa brought up at their meeting on Monday night, and it was resolved to give £2 10a towards defraying the coat of the repairs. Sundry matters of routine business were discussed, and votes of thanka accorded to those who had given their aervioesin the recent entertainments. Babgioba Town Clock.—The so called publio dock has not yet been put in position owing to the faot that the amount of subscriptions to defray the oost has not been raised. The esse and the bell have been erected by Mr Jennings, stationer, who seems to have made the aame a capital advertisement for his warea, but the diala and worka of the clock are not yet in position, and will only be finiehed on completion of the subscription list. It must be admitted that the clock is not in the moat central part of the town for a publio olook, and this ia probable the cause for the delay in obtaining the aubseriptions. Ihdubtbial Association.—At the annual meeting of the above association last evening, Mr A. H. McLean preferred a oomplaint •gainst the retiring president of the association, on the ground that Mr Jameson had acted contrary to the duties of his office aa president of the association in thwarting his efforts to establish a local industry. It was agreed to refer the matter in the first instance to the committee of the association at its next meeting. library. Mr Superintendent Blackwell occupied the chair. The balance sheet of the entertainment Riven by the Albion Company wag preiented, showing the gross receipts to hare been no less a snm than £4l, and the expenses £l6, leaving a profit to the brigade of £25. "Votes of thanks were aoeorded to the Albion Dramatic Company, and the members who had sold the tickets with such a degree of success. The ohairman, on behalf of the members of the brigade, after referring to the zeal and energy of their worthy secretary, handed that officer, Mr William Hayman, a handsome marble clock with suitable inscription, alluding to Mr Hayman's energy as secretary. The timepiece had been purchased by subscription from Mr Butoher, watohmaker, of that town. It was decided the members would attend the torohlight procession and entertainment to be given by the Bangiora brigade at an early date. AsiraußTON Cqubsing Club.—The maiden fixture of this newly formed club was held yesterday, and the weather being as near perfection as it would be possible to get, there was a good muster of sportsmen to witness the result of the various courses. Permission had been obtained to course on the Fairfield estate, and the particular locality ohosen was near the cemetery; but owing to the soaroity and perversity of the hares very little sport was to be found in this neighborhood, and •Iter one unsuccessful course, it was found necessary to seek fresh fields and tussocks brown away in the direction of Dromore. Details of the various courses will be givon to-morrow. Bangioba Mblanbsian Mibsiok. —On Monday evening, a lecture was delivered in St. John's Church Sunday Sohoolroom by the Bev. D. Buddock on the Melanesian Miision. There was a fair attendance. The Ven. Archdeacon Dudley ocoupied the oliair. At the olose of a most interesting acoount of the progress of this important mission, a collection was taken up for the benefit of the funds. A vote of thanks to the rev. leoturer and the ven. ohairman conoluded the proceedings.

Theatbk Boyal.—"New Babylon" drew a very good house last night, and the picoe from firit to last went very well indeed. Mr Holt's songs were encored, and he responded. To-night the lame bill will be given, and the season cloies on Saturday next. Mebivaie Ehtebtainmbnt. —The above entertainment takes plaoe this evening. A capital programme has been prepared, comprising Bongs, glees, &0., and the comediotta *■ Bendezvous." The Bbv. Mb Wbstbroox.—-A congregational meeting was held in the Presbyterian Church, Greymoutb, on the 15th inst. The Bev. Mr West, ol Kumara, presided. The object of the meeting was to take steps to call a minister to the charge of the church at Qreymouth. It was unanimously reßolved to moderate in a oall to the Bev. Mr Westbrook of Bakaia. The document was signed by all the members and adherents who wore present, and the signatures of those belonging to the Church, but who were absent, will, there is no doubt, be obtained before it is forwarded to Mr Westbrook, and no time will be lost in seouiing the services of Mr Weßtbrook, should the rev. gentleman aooept the unanimous call of the Qreymonth Presbyterian congregation. The Lambing Season. —For some time East the weather in the Ashburton district as been 81l that any fairly temperately constituted individual could wish for, and the hopes of the farmers and runholders should be equally bright. Limbing on the plains Bouth of Ashburton is well under weigh, and judging by present appearances, there is every probability of a high percentage this season. There were a few black, ugly looking oloudi and a bit of a blow and a storm experienced on Friday night, but very few of the lambs appear to have been injuriously affooted bj it, and information comes to hand froa reliable sources that the percentage of lambi on the plains promises this season to be quits equal, if not above, that of former years Taken altogether the weather during tht winter has been remarkably fine, and then has been but little rain in the Ashburtoi district oompared to that experienced f urthe: North, and also south of Timaru. There hai been an unusual amount of frost, but th. days have been fine, and the weather a present is perfection. Ihe ohairman read the advertisement oalling the meeting, alao the reply of the Minister of Publio Worka to a deputation from Nelaon—• viz., that a Koyal Commission would be appointed to report on the matter. It was resolved—" That the meeting should stand adjourned pending the report of the Commaaion." It waa thought advisable that the chairman ahould write to Mr Mcllraifch, M.H.8., expressing the feeling of the meetI ing on this subject. Letters were read from Messrs John Tinline, Henry Wharton and Jones, atating that they were unavoidably compelled to be abaent, but that the objeot of the meeting had their entire sympathy.
