According to the "Weier Zeitung the Bussian Government has sent orders for bunaLag three large ironclads in England, three otherß in Prance, and two largo transport steamers in Germany. . Oo the 23rd June a new screw dredger ol 800 tons, built and engined by Messrs W. Simons said Co., was launched complete from their works at Benfrew. It is named Clyde, and is the property of the Clyde Lighthouse Trust, having been built under the direotion ot their engineers, Messrs D. andT. Stevenson, Edinburgh. This is the third dredger this firm have constructed for the Biver Clyde, and will be the most powerful, being fitted with compound engines of 350 horse-power, and is designed to raise 506 tons per hoar from a depth of 35ft to 40ft of water. On board aie steam appliances for head, stern, and side movements, also for lifting, lowering, and manoeuvring; and throughout the hull and machinery every recent
improvement has been adopted. . The American barque Trinity, with a crew ot thirty-three men, sailed from New London, Connecticut, on June Ist, 1880, on a whaling and sealing cruise in the Southern Ocean, and arrived at Heard's Island on Ootober 2nd, 1880., She anohored off the island, whiohiß situated in latitude 53 deg. S., longitude 73 deg. h.. On Ootober 17th, during a severe gale, she had to be beached in order to save the lives of. the craw The crew remained on the island, which is uninhabited, until 15th February last, when they were rescued by the United States steamer Marion Beat to their rescue by the Navy Department. During these sixteen months of captivity they lived on sea elephant, penguin flash and eggs, and sea cabbage, and lived in small hats placed titers at various times by whalerß. During the winter season the men suffered severely from the intense cold, and two of them, while out hunting, were frozen to death.
