The residence of Jacob Joseph was burglariously entered early on Friday morning. The noise made awakened Mr Joseph’s son, who fired a revolver at the burglar, but the shot miiaad its mark and entered the top of the sofa. The man escaped. There is no clue to the perpetrator. OBEYMOUTH, August 21.

A public meeting was held thii evening to discuss the necessity for retiring the wharfage and tonnage dues of the port, and compelling the owners of the Wallsend Colliery to work same or to have the lease cancelled. The Mayor occupied the chair. The following resolutions were carried unanimously: “ That the meeting desires to draw the attention of the Government to the excessive tonnage and wharfage dues now levied on steamers and vessels at the port of Greymontb, and to express the opinion that the Government should forthwith revise the scale of rates with a view of reducing them to the same rates now charged at Westport.” “ That this meeting is of opinion the Government should forthwith compel the lessees to work the Wallsend mine in terms of the conditions of their lease, or else take the necessary steps to cancel the lease, and to have the property thrown open to the public.” It was also resolved—“ That a copy of the foregoing resolutions be forwarded to the Government.” DUNEDIN, August 21,

A policeman in plain clothes paraded the town last evening, and arrested a lad for using indecent language. The lad was fined at the Court this morning.
