The Queensland footballers played the University on Monday, end Ooun*y Cumberland yesterday. The University won by a goal and four tries to one try; but the Queenslanders scored a victory against Cumberland by a goal. A complimentary tea banquet was tendered to Mr John Davis on Monday night to sympathise with him in regard to the strictures passed by the Trades Defence Association at a recent me ding upon the appointment of the Licensing Bench. Arrangements are being made to hold a public meeting in the School of Arts for the purpose of aiding the widow and children of the late Henry Kendall. Tub extension of the tramways to Glebe and from Hunter to Bridge street was opened with much success on Monday. MELBOURNE. Sir Henry Parkcs was entertained at luncheon at the Oriental Hotel by the members of tbo Government yesterday at noon. In the evening be was banquetted in the supper room of the Town Hall. The compliment was tendered as a recognition of hia valuable services, and a welcome bask by the citizens of Melbourne to Australia. About 150 gentlemen were present, including the Mayor, Mr Mcßain, Sir Geo. Yerdon, Gumming, Mr Berry, Mr Mclntyre, MrZox, and Mr Walsh, M.L.A. The ceremony passed off most successfully. Sir Henry Parkes left by a special train yesterday for Sydney. A movement is afloat to have Emerald Hill proclaimed a city. The lists issued for collections towards the Working Men’s College have been rent in The total collected is £3OB. W. H. Masters, agent for the Edison and Bell Telephone Company, has tendered to light Spencer street station by electricity. The Government accepted the tender, Mr Masters sta'es that shortly he will be able to light carriages by electricity. ADELAIDE.
Statistical returns show that 12,000 persons arrived in the colony last year, and 14,000 left. A largely signed memorial against the erection of the Parliament Houses on the proposed site has been presented to Parliament. Mr Newland moved in the House that the present site is undesirable, and proposed several other sites. Mr Colton moved the House to divide, when the motion was lost by a majority of 14. Crop accounts ore most favorable, the weather being seasonable in most parts. Rain is general throughout the country. BRISBANE. The lighter Rose and Thistle sank yesterday with 70 tors cargo.
