The following is correspondence relativa to Sir Geo. Grey's munificent gift of Lis library to tho citizens of Auckland: — " Wellington, August lS'ib. " Daar Shera,—Auckland hes now a University. lam anxious that tho munificent gift thus made to tae city should b; supplemented by all useful accessories. I therefore wish. on suoh an o:oasion, to give effeot to auintention I hava long entertained by giving to the oitizans of Auckland my library, if ths Mayor &nd Corporation for tha lima biing will act as trustees in the sama *rsy ss_ the library I gave to Capetown is held. Will you s;eak to the Mayor on tho subject, and let nis'know how this idea can bo b:st carried out. I will then write to him regarding it. " G. GnzY."
Upon the receipt of this message, Mr Shora immediately waited on ths Mayer, and made known to him the contests of the comrr.unicaticc, and, after consulting r ..it'i air Clark, the following reply returned:— " Auckland, August 19. " Sir George Grey, K.C.B, M. H.R. "I have had greit pleasure in on the Mayor of Auckland, ia accordance Vviih your interesting telegram of this narcing, in r ormicg him of your munificsr.; offer to endow the citizens of Auckland with your library. His Woseniprequested me to ?c?.tcj to you hit thanks on behsdf of tJ-L: people ct Auckland for your very valuable and said that he wculd bring tho subject before the Corporation at the earliest opp;rtumty, when ho had no doubt arrangements wculd bo made which weuld be satisfactory to you aui3 the publio.
