LONDON, August 17. - The Bank of England has to-day raised the rate of discount to 4 per cent.

The Australian cricketers commenced a match to-day against a United Eleven of South England, at Portsmouth. The weather was very fine, and there was a large attendance of spectators during the day. The Home team went first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for a total of 196, the highest scorer being Mr O. F. Thornton, who made 45.
