Ha was spoken to on board the Wanaka by an old schoolfellow of his. Legal.—Hits Honor Mr Justice Richmond held a sitting in Chambers and Bankruptcy this morning. The cases of Fagan v the Waste Lands Board and Saunders v the Same, in which it has been decided to take the evidence orally, were dxrd for Monday week, and the haneo ease of Ware and Jones v Lyttelton Harbor Board for next Monday. Kaiapoi Oddfellows’ and Foebstbes’ Asnivbbsabt. — A meeting of the members
of the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge of Oddfellows and of Court Woodford ancient Order of Foresters v.m held in the hall of the
former yesterday evening. About fifty were present. Mr A. T. Clark occupied the chair. After seme discussion, it was resolved to celebrate tho anniversary of both societies by a picnic by rail to Weka Pass, to ke held on Friday in the second week of October, and a ball to be held in the evening. Tho manegers appointed were—Foresters : Bros. Brooke, Pullan, T, Blackwell, W. Hayman, O, Haymar, W. Eamsden, and Q-. Templeton ; Oddftllors: Bros. Clark, B. W. Smith, F. Butt, Bate, H. Keetley, Edmunds, and Q-. Ellen. This committee was then formed into sub committees, to superintend the train arrangements, the ball, and general matters affecting the success of the undertaking. It was resolved that the committee meat on Wednesday, the 30th inst. Thbatbb Roxai,.— Tho play of “New Babylon" was repeated last night to a good house, and went well throughout. It will be played again this evening. A.OF.—The Couit Thistle of the Forest Lodge ,'held its usual fortnightly meeting in St. Saviour’s schoolroom, Sydenham, last night. Tnere wan a good attendance of membfrs present. After transacting a considerable amount of business, the Court adjourned for harmony, after which it was closed in due form by O.R Bro. Haig. Oohbeotion —The chairman of tho Christchurch, Sydenham and Suburban Building Society asks us to state that at last night's meeting, when he stated that he held in his hand a deed with Mr Dunbar’s signature attached, this was an error, as the document referred to was the requisition to call the meeting, upon which Mr Dunbar's signature appeared.
Attempted Suicide.— A lad named John Mitchell, who has recently been an inmate of the Armagh itreet depot, was prevented committing suicide yesterday morning. Constable Briggg, who was passing along Cambridge terrace, noticed the lad on the river bank, opposite the Canterbury Olnb, divesting himself of his clothing, and evidently intending to commit suicide. He at once conveyed the lad to the police depot.

The minute* of last masting having been read and confirmed, the (secretary produced the balance sheet, wherein it wae »hown that the club was in a most (satisfactory condition, and had to its credit a ' balance of £ll9 6e lid on the year’* operaMona. Thi* hiving been read and confirmed, a resolution was proposed by Mr Brown, imd carried —“ That a committee, oon»ietmg of Messrs Piper, Seaton, Brown, Coles, Orange, and Dunbar, should revise the rules of the club, and report upon the same in a month’s time.” The following officers for the ensuing year were then elected :—President, W. Wynn William*; stewards, O. Newton, J. Peprill, W. Attwood, J, W. Davis, Dr. Print, P. JSgan, J. Cole, J. Campbell, P. C • Duncan, - Seaton, B. Richardson, G. O’Connell ; Judge, J. Walker ; starter, Mr Orange j handioapper, B Griffiths; clerk of the course, If. G. P. Leach; clerk of the scales, A. Dunbar ; hon. treasurer, H. Piper. Mr Jas. Bamford was elected secretary with an honorarium of £25 per annum. The managing committee elected consist of Messrs Seaton, Attwood, Orange, Brown, Hall, J. W. Davis, O. Willis, Martin, and Pitt. A letter was received from Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin, offering the club the use of two totalisators for the ensuing season, they being at the expense of erecting permanent buildings, Ac., the clnb to receive 6 per cent, of the total receipts. After some discussion it was agreed to defer taking any steps in the matter for the present. A vote of thanks to the past season’s officers terminated the proceedings. Bkll Binging.—Last night six members of the Cathedral Bell-ringers’ Society accomplished the feat of going through their first peal of 120 changes—Grandsire Double^—in a very creditable style. This is the highest number of changes that can be rang on five bells, and is supposed to be the first peal ever rang in New Zealand, certainly the first ever rung in this island. About seven months ago three, out of the above six members, had not previously ever handled a bell rope before, and only one of the above members at that time (the master-ringer, Mr Andrews) had any knowledge in the art of change ringing.
Hotel Improvements at Post. On Thnrtday night Mr Patrick Barry, holt of the Cambridge Hotel at Port, gave a spread to hie friends on the occasion of the completion of the extensions to hie house. Mr David Dimond occupied the chair at the dinner, and upwards of thirty guests were present. The cloth was laid in the new large commercial room of the hotel, and the table was laden with the best of everything in the market—fish, fowl, and flash, and a variety of delicacies, served in a style equal with that of a professional city caterer. Mr Barry has at considerable outlay converted bis house into a first class family hotel of seventeen rooms, and has added adjacent to it a private cottage residence for his family, thu* making the Cambridge ae far bj is possible approach the ideal contemplated by the new Licensing Act—a wellappointed public place of residence, and not merely a drinking shop. The hotel fronts on Winchester st'eet ninety feet, and on Dublin street forty feet, and is a well-built twostorey building. The contractors, Messrs Sutton and Weastell, have finished the structure in an unexceptionable manner, and the inside finishing, the painting, and 10 forth was executed in the same careful workmanlike way by Messrs Allwright Bros.
United Methodist Fbbk Church.—A soiree was held in the schoolroom of the United Methodist Free Church, St. Asaph street, last evening. Tea was provided by the ladies of the congregation at six o’clock, subsequent to which a concert was given by the united choirs of the St. Asaph street and Congregational Churches. Mr Oorriok was the conductor, several of his pupils and other ladies and gentlemen rendering assistance. There was a good attendance. The proceeds will be devoted to the harmonium fund.
Oub Education System. —At the meeting of the Board of Education for the North Canterbury District, held yesterday afternoon, the chairman read the following statistics of the coat per head of attendance: — Auckland—No. of schools, 194; average attendance, 12,168; office expenses, 2s sid ; inspection, 2s 8d ; salary, £3 6s 4Jd; incidental, 4s Canterbury—No. of schools, 129; average attendance, 11,601 ; office expenses, 2s 3d ; inspection, 2s Ifd ; salary, £3 3s 9£d ; incidental, 9i BJd ; total, £3 17s lOfi. Otago— No. of school!, 164 j average attendance, 5.5,589 ; office expenses, Is 6ji ; inspection, Is 9£d ; salaries, £3 8s 6£d; incidental, 6s 10id ; total, £3 18s 9d. Wbathkb Exchange. New Zealand, A severe B.W. gale passed over the colony during the night, with rain, hail, and snow, hut it was fine and bright yesterday. Australia—A depression is off Portland, with westerly wind, and showery; falling barometer in New South Wales.
