BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual bi-monthly meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education waa held yesterday, at 3 p.m. Present—Messrt J. Inglia (chairman), H. W. Perymao, Q. Booth, A. H. Cunningham, Bev. 0. Fraser, H. E. Webb. The business transacted by the chairman since the last meeting of the Board was submitted and approved. The inspectors’ reports of the Papanui, Woodend, North road, Gebbie’s Pass road, Q-ebbie’a Talley, Cbarteris Bay, and Governor's Bay South schools were laid upon - the table.

An application from the Fapanui school committee for certain repairs and alterations to the sohoolhonse, grounds and the master’s house was considered, and an expenditure of £SO was authorised, subject to the discretion of the chairman. The Eiohmond school committee's application for certain alterations to the infant school was declined.

A snm of £5 was granted to the Woodend school committee introspect of an outbuilding erected on the school grounds by the late master.

The Chairman stated that with regard to the complaint preferred by Mr Farr, to the effect that the day men recently employed at the Gloucester street school had wasted their

time, he had made inquiries of Mr Rutland, who exonerated the men, stating, farther, that no avoidable delay had arisen, A report was read from Mr Bctland as to the alleged dilapidated state of the main and side schoolhonses at Pigeon Bay, and recommending certain alterations at an estimated cost of £152 13s 6d. It was decided that so much of the work as was absolutely necessary should be done. An application from the North Lobnrn school committee for increased drainage facilities around the school-house resulted in certain work being authorised. A further application for a sum for fencing was acceded to, £5 being voted for the purpose. Certain repairs to the master’s house, as certified to bo necessary by Mr Butland, were agreed to, the estimated cost of same being £66. Repairs and alterations to East Oxford and Waddington school houses were agreed to. The application for a side school at Annat was next considered, and granted, it being proposed to rent the Orange Hall as the school-house at a rental of £8 per month. The West Christchurch school committee were authorised to fence the south-wett side of the school grounds, with a recommendation to reduce the amount by charging a portion of the cost to adjoining property holders, and reporting what would be thus raised|to the Board. A further application re a caretaker’s house was left over till funds were available.

An application from Kaiapoi for a iam_ to cover the cost of removing ecq_ refiling gymnastic apparatus was deferred for a similar reason, as also was an application from the Opawa school committee that an additional quarter or eighth of an acre of land adjacent to the school grounds be purchated at a cost of £SOO an acre. An application from the Ashburton school committee for the refund of certain monies expended without authority was refused, ilr Allard wrote thanking the Board for the increase of salary voted him last meeting, Mr H. B. Webb thought the Board should recognise the extra services rendered by Mr Wallace.

The Chairman spoke in high term* of the way in which Mr Wallace had done the work daring Mr Veel’s illness, and it was ultimately resolved, on the motion of Mr H. B. Webb —“ That an honorarium of £2O be paid to Mr Wallace for his extra services.” The Chairman thought it desirable that the Government should be asked to restore the 10i per head taken off the school children soma time since, and it was unanimously agreed, that a telegram to that effect be sent to the Government. The East Ohr.stchuroh School committee wrote respecting the memorial recently cent from Phillipstown, asking to be formed into a separate rchool district, stating that although the proposed action was considered premature by the committee, if a public meeting was called and agreed to the proposed action, it would place no obstacle in the way. --' It was considered advisable to defer the application for the new district till January next. In tbe meantime the occupation of the Congregational chapel as an additional schoolroom would be sanctioned by the Board. The Kswai Bush school committee having refused to reinstate Mr Dominick Browne as schoolmaster, it was agreed that a letter be sent, stating that if Mr Browne was not reinstated within one week the school would be closed.

Mr Cox, of Little Akaloa, wrote resigning the mastership of that school, which was accepted. An explanatory reply of the Malvern sohool committee was next read, and it was decided that that body be requested to carry out the instructions of the Board, and that an answer is requested before the next matting of the Board. It was pointed out that the committee in question had not advertised for a master. The appointment of an architect to the Board was postponed. The report of the Sohool of Art was read and adopted. The Board then preceedei to consider certain matters in committee, and on resuming adjourned.
