The steamship Marsala, which is to load at Port Chalmers with frozen meat, has arrived at Melbourne. She calls at Sydney, and is due at Port Chalmers on the Ist prox. Messrs Money Wigrana and Sons have sold their steamship Norfolk to the West India Mail Steamship Company for JB »0,C0). The Northumberland has been converted into a sailing ship. , , A new shaft and propeller for the broken down steamer Tui arrived by the Manapouri yesterday from Wellington, to which port it will be returned, the Tui having found her way back there. The harbor master at Port Chalmers recommends the Board there to follow the example of the Lyttelton Harbor Board, by engaging in the towing work of the port. He considers a great reduction to ships’ coats at that port would be effected if the towing service were in the hands of the Board. „ , A brandy flask containing a small slip of paper has been found on the beach near Geelong. Tire paper bears the following words :—January 15th.— Loch Maree gone down off Cape of Good Hope, when bound to London. All hands were lost save one. —Angus Cascard, able seaman.” A doubt is entertained of the authenticity of the memorandum. _ . ~ , . While the Union Steamship Company s Mahinapua was proceeding to Napier on the 27th ult. from Gisborne she met with a somewhat extraordinary mishap. Shortly after leaving Gisborne, one of the anchors,_which is fixed by a patent lever, slipped out of its fastenings and dropped overboard, carrying the chain with it, and was not checked until it reached the bottom. The vessel at this time was going at full speed. The anchor evidently got a hold of the bottom, wbioh caused the chain to be snapped off after about thirty fathoms of it had run out, thus causing the vessel to lurch over as if she had •track on a rock.
