THE GARFIELD MEMORIAL.

Mr 0, B. Tsylor, the TJ.S. Consular Agent here, has requested os to give publicity to the following document, which we do with pleasure:—

U.S. Consulate, Auckland, July 22nd, 1882. C. B. Taylor, Esq., U.S, Consular Agent

Christchurch, N.Z. Sir,—l hare to acquaint yon that 1 am in receipt of a note from Mr Frelinghnysen, Secretary of State, commending the proposed Garfield Memorial Hospital at Washington, D.C. Mr Frelinghnysen says in the note—- “ It is thonght that the proposed memorial cannot but commend itself, not only to the American temporarily abroad, but to all persons of whatever nationality who abhor assassination and wish to show their respect for the cause of law and order ”

The executive committee of the hospital, of which General W. T. Sherman ia chairman, have issued an appeal for aid in fnrtherance of the memorial. The appeal says “ It will be a provision for the relief cf hnman suffering, from the cup of which he drank the bitterest dregs, and in the breadth of its hnman charity it will fitly typify the noble nature and exalted aims of the hero and martyr. The hospital ia designed to be as wide in its scope of beneficence as was the kindly heart of the dead President in its outstretch of hnman sympathies. It will be open to all needing its aid and ministrations without regard to class, caste, creed or color. To be a sufferer in need of help will be the only passport required to enter its doors and secure its aid. Such an institution founded in the cause of charity, and bearing the name of * Garfield,’ appeals to the generosity of everyone, and to everyone the appeal ia made.” I have to request that you will make public in some suitable manner the proposed plan of honoring the memory of our late President, and also that yon have been authorised to receive and forward contributions for the object in question, I am, air, very respectfully. Tour obedient servant, G. W. Getfin, Consul.
