A Japanese man-of-war in New Zealand waters is a rarity, and the Tsuknba now expected at Auckland from Hobart w;th a crew of 533 officers and men will cause quite a stir in maritime circles no doubt and among the curious i public. This unpronounceable named vessel was built by British shipwrights at Malacca iu 1851 ct teak. She carries four 64-pounder converted ■ Eiupp guns and six brass 32-pouEders, and is in: command of Captain Kasama. Much as it has ( beeome the Custom to give the names of the; officers of men-of-war, a departure in the case of < the Tsuknba is excusable on the plea of not wilhing to needlessly perplex tho unoffending loader in search of news who might be led into vainly attempting to pronounce them, ahe navigating lieutenant Kashiwabara heads the Bat. The vessel is likely to come South ns far oo Wellington, and it is just possible Captain will see it to be necessary that he should make himself acquainted with Lyttelton aa being the “ Liverpool of New Zealand before he leaves the colony. , , It would appear from the following taken from the “ Otago Times” that the barquentine Ocean Hanger, one of the C.W.T. line, bailing from Lyttelton, was found to be in need of extensive repairs upon her arrival at Fort Lhalmare from Mauritius. The “Times says; « The barquontine Ocean Banger, after being nearly three weeks in the Graving Dock undergoing repairs, baa been taken alongside the George street pier, where her wants will be completed. While in the Graving Dock the contractor, Mr W, Murray, had h r stripped and opened for (inspection, when the timbers and planking proved to bo sound-and well preserved. Several of her treenails were also backed out for inspection, and proved more or loss slack* Consequent upon this it was decided to almost retrcenail her. Several knee bolts was backed out and new ones substituted. She was entirely stripped and caulked from end to end. A quantity of chunam was laid on the copper line to a depth of four feet below it, and after being sheathed with felt she was re-metalled. Her topsides have oil received new treenails, and her decks have been caulked. Her rudder has been overhauled, and new bushes fitted to the gudgeons. It was intended to lay new decks, but as soma difficulty was experienced in procuring suitable kauri pine, this has bean deferred until she returns from htr projected voyage to the Cape of Good Hope and MauritrM.” SHIPPING TELEGEAMS.
