RAISING CALVES.
A writer in the " American Dairyman gives bio way of bringing up a oalf as follows :—Tako the oalf from the mother at two or three days old. Lsarn it to drink milk. Skim milk is best, if not eoured. It makes bone more rapidly. Have it the natural warmth of the cow's milk when drawn. Give two quarts in the morning, one at noon and two at night the first two weeks. Increase the feed as the oslf gets older, as your judgment dictates. At ten weeks old he can stand eight quarts at a meal, if he can get it, and will grow proportionately. Should he loour, which he will, if not fed regularly, or the feed is too hot or too oold, or tho milk is sour, or the oalf was :-ofc healthy from the start, give him a pint of hay tea after every moal until cured. If it ia a spring calf, keep him in the barn until the middle of September. The hot sun of summer montho is detrimental to calves. Bee that his bed is cleaned every day, and use good, clean straw for bedding, but never ewamp hay or sawdust. Have a box of wheat bran vrhere he oan lap it from the commencement ; aha fresh water. He will Boon learn to uae these; also a wisp of coarse upland hay. Tho first winter give roots, apples; indeed, you may give shoed apples when three months old. Do not feed oorn meal the first year, and always feed the milk clear, and after nine weeks you need not heat it, and it is not absolutely neoeESivy to feed it after that age if not convenient, bat feed shorts until at least six months old. Veal calves should have all the milk they can take until six weeks old. After thoy make bone and the cutlets lose their fine flavor, it is no longer veal in its true sense.
In conclusion, let mo say, oommence to train calves the first week ; give them a name ; they will learn it; teaoh them to lead, and all you wi9h them to know; they will not forget it.
