, r PHB PBEIS XIIfiOOIiTIOHO AUCKLAND, August 10. Mr Holcombe, who went to England to make arrangements for the sale and settlement of the Patetere block, is now on his way back to Auckland. The Native reserves on this block will be finally dealt with by the Supreme Court in September. The body found in the barber to-day it identified as that of Walter Liskett, formerly a printer, but latterly committed as a vagrant. It is believed to be a case of suicide.
Thomas Mason, barmen at tbo Nevada Hotel, died suddenly. He slipped on the pavement on Saturday and hurt his back. On Monday, while skylarking on tbs stairs of the hotel, he got pushed over, falling four or five steps, and hitting his head on the staircase. He died next day. At a meeting of Auckland cricketers, Mr P F, Buokland presiding, it was resolved to send a team to the South daring the ensuing season, and the secretary was authorised to write to the Cricket Associations of the leading Southern towns to ascertain what terms they would give towards the expenses. The chairman offered a handsome subscription towards the tour. _ Numerous applications are coming in to the" Immigration Officer to nominate friends at home, and eighty were received in three days, in addition to 330 recorded before the nomination system was renewed. Misa Laura Smith, of the Young Women'* Institute, leaves for Sydney to organise a similar institution there. A committee was appointed at a meeting to-night to consider the feasibility of carrying on the InatlSßfes after her decartnre.
DUNEDIN, August 10. Thomas McGill, draper, of the Arcade, has been further remanded cn a charge of attempted arson at bis premises. Tho harbor-master to day in his report urged that an application should be renewed to tho Government for a powerful fog signal at Taiaroa Heads in connection with the lighthouse. The following is a quotation from his report with regard to dredging—“ Thera has been a prevalence of easterly winds daring the month, keeping up the swell on the bar that seriously hindered dredging operations thereon ; bat at the same time tbo little work that has been done in that direction has so improved the depth of water a* should dispel all uneasiness as to the practicability of keeping a good deep water channel at the entrance to the harbsr. It may be worth noting that between the first and lost dredging operations, heavy seas have rnlkd in and not made any perceptible real king. The least depth obtained at mean low water level on fith inet. was 19 ?t, and instead of a narrow ridge, with only IGift as at the commencement of dredging, there is now a long lab with 18it and 21£t,

The electric light ie being successfully need to-night in the reading room cf Watson's Hotel, Ten Swan lamps are kept burning in the room. About 500 carcases of mutton are now stored away in tho freezing chamber* at Burnside. Mr Ccxon, who has superintended the erection of tho machinery, leaves for Christchurch to-morrow. The firm of which he ia the New Zealand representative, baa another contract there.

At a meeting of the Harbor Boerd, a communication from the Harbormaster with regard to luminous paint was road. It had been found that luminous paint answered itff purpose very well in rendering buoys more readily seen, but great difficulty was experienced in keeping the buoys so painted clem, as the bird* were attracted by it, and in a very ehort time the white color was gone. In order to make it effectual ho considered it would la-paintirg six times a year. It was estimated that it would cost £3 to paint a small buoy and £9 to paint a large one. Tha Ohairmm understood that the stronger tha sunlight during the day the better the paint shone c.t night, so that at this time or tha year, when it was most wanted, the light would be weakest. As it appeared that the Government were making inquiries into the question, tho matter was allowed to drop. At a meeting of tha Canned of the New Zealand R3j Association the following officers were appointed :—Vios-presidsnte, Col. Stavsley, Major Wales, Major Hill Jack (Dunedin). Members cf Council—(’apt. Reaves (Dunedin), Oapt. Brown (Cromwell), Sub-LLut. Davy (Wellington). Executive committee—Messrs France, Shaw, and Fraser (Wellington), Messrs Hill and Strange (Ohlistohurch), Messrs Qodiie, Taylor, Hutchinson, Lambert, Smith, McGregor (Dunedin), Messrs Xhomion, Harwell, amt Scandrett (Invercargill). The auditors’ account- were adopted, showing a credit bilance of £l9 13; 2d. Deduction* from prizes at the last meeting, amounting to £56 ss, are tho only of tha association. The rules were eligibly amended. A draft programme for tlw ensuing meeting was prepared for further conaideration.

At the Police Court to day the charge against Denis H-.fferman for setting fire to two stacks of barley, with intent to defraud the New Zealand Insurance Company, was dismissed. Another charge against liim of procuring a policy of insurance by m-.-tua oi. a false declaration, will be heard on Monday.
At the Harbor Board to-Q'.y a proposal to increase the wharfage dues come up. It was unanimously resolved cot to make any in* orar.se, owing to the trade of the pert Laving suffered by the late wrecks.
