VALEDICTORY DINNER.
Last evening at tha invitation of Messrs Oram Bros, a number of gentlemen assembled at the Boyal Hotel to bid farewell to Messrs Savage and Dilworth, who it will be remembered have borne a considerable part in tho recent International Exhibition. The chair was occupied by Mr J. W. Oram, and the vice-chair by Mr M. H. Oram. The chairman was supported on the right by Mr Savage and Professor Ton Hoast, and on the left by Mr Dilworth and his Worship the Mayor of Christchurch. The serving and menu was excellent throughout, the viands comprising all the delicacies of the season.
After ample justice had been done to the providing of tha Messrs Oram Bros., The chairman gave the usual loyal toasts, which were enthusiastically responded to. Tho Chairman then gave the toast of the evening, “ Our Quests, Messrs Savsgo and Dilworth.” Hs said that during their sojourn in Christchurch these gentlemen had made hosts of friends, not alone from their business relatione, but from their capacity for social enjoyment, which had bean appreciated most thoroughly. As to Mr Savage, tha name of his friends wera legion, and ha only trusted that at a future period they would return to New Zealand, and thus afford their friends an opportunity to give them a hearty welcome.
The least was drunk with much enthusiasm.
Mr Savage, in responding, spoke of the hospitality ho had received during his stay ia Christchurch. Ho had been in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, and had never received such a hearty walooma and hospitality as he had experienced during his stay in Christchurch. His visit to Now Zealand had been short, but it had convinced him that the country was one of the best ho had seen. He desired to thank the residents of Christchurch for the manner in which they had received them, and the hospitality extended to them during their stay. Mr Dilworth also responded, and spoke iu glowing terms of the kindness he had received, in common with other exhibitors, from the citizens of Christchurch. He ahe desired to pay a tribute to the Press c ! Christchurch, which had always assisted to the beat of their power, not only the Exhibition itself bat the exhibitors.
Mr O. A. Pritchard proposed the r. x; toast, “The Mayor and City Council,"coupled with the names of his Worship the Mayor and Or. Hulbart, who responded. The other toasts proposed were, “ The educational institutions of Canterbury, 11 coupled with the names of Professors Ton Haast and Bickerton and Mr Foster, who re tponded; “The Press of Canterbury,” re tponded to by Messrs 0. E. Briggs, Q. R Hart, and B. E. N. Twopeny { “ Our hosts,” proposed by Mr Dilworth and responded to by Messrs J. W. Oram and M. H. Oram. The evening was most enjoyably spent by those present, and the only regret was the parting from such friends as Mr Bsvago and Mr Dilworth,
