HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The usual meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was hela at the B-eid room yetterday afternoon. Present—The Major of Ohristchnrch (in the chair), the Mayer of Sydenham, Dr. Priiis, J. G-. Hawles, and J. B. March, secretary. The seoretary laid on the tablo statement of the receipts and expenditure for the pass year. [These have already bein published}. The hospital oommittee rsportt-d that dur« ing the fortnight ending August sth twerty. ono patients were admitted into the hospital, and twenty-seven were discharged, leaving sixty one patients in the institution ; during the same period there were firs deaths. The number of patients in the hocpital in the corresponding period of last year was fiityfivp.

Letters wore read: From the hou:3 surgeon, asking permission to undertake the duties of medical officer to Sunny side Lunatic Atyiuni during the indisposition of Dr. Hacon; permission was granted. From Colonial Seoretary, requesting information as to the number of patients and staff and the salaries of the latter, on June 30th last. The information had been supplied, viz —Patients, 63 ; staff—house surgeon, steward, dispenser, dresser, housekeeper, 9 nurses, 2 hou*emaidr, 2 laundresses, gatekeeper, parter, gardener, cook, scul.'eryman, and kitchen boy, being in all 11 sales and 13 feraalrs; their united salaries amounted to £1470 per annum. Fi-om the Colonial Secretary, asking the Board to continue for the present the existusf system of distributing oharitable aid at Kaiapoi and Waimate ; agreed to. From the same, stating that the proposed repairs, ki. t to the Asbburton Old Men's Hjma had been approved. The secretary reported that the works were in hand.

The report for the month of the Lytteltom Orphanage showed that two boys and rix girli had boen withdrawn ; tkere had not been any admissions. The nuuibar remaining in tbe institution wai—Males, 48 ; female*, 36 ; total, 84 la view of the resignation cf Mr and Mia Sopp, advertisements were ordered to be inset-led in the newspapers calling for candidates for the offices of master and matron, a married couple, their combined salaries to be £275 per annum.

There had been one admission to the Ljtcelt on casual ward and one discharge; three patienti remained therein. There had been twi pstteats admitted in the fortnight to the Akaroa Cottage H.Qipital. The matter reported on the Ashburton Old Men's Home, that there were forty-one iamatea of that establishment, la reference to a complaint by the master as to an inmate who bad assaulted him, instructions were given for the prosecution of the offender, ad it was resolved that Dr. Pries and the iseretsry be empowered to deal in future summarily with insubordinate*. The Board expressed regret that in reporting the ciae the master made use of a threat of resignation unless extraordinary meuuies for his protection were adopted. Fire pounds was voted to repair the roof of the depot in Armagh street, the Board sgain regretting that they had not been allowed to sell the property and use the prioa for the purchase of more suitable premises. After dealing with some charitable aid, cases the Bot.rd adjourned till August 23rd..
