EXECUTION OF WINIATA.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] AUCKLAND, August 4,
In obedience to Wiuiata’s wish Oleghorne, jun,, was present at the execution, but the only final statement he made to him was that made from the gallows. In an interview yesterday with Oleghorne the latter urged him not to die with a lie on his lips, but he persisted that it was tho half-caste who had committed the murder. Oleghorne asked him why ho had on a previous evening sharpened a billhook with which the murder was committed. This he denied, but Oleghorne assured him that it was useless denying it, as ha had seen him in the eot. Winiata then commenced to cry, and made no more allusion to the deed. The day before his trial ha is stated to have remarked to one of the prison officials—“ Suppose I get off, lot that half-caste look out.” This was referring to Barlow, his capturer, thus showing his revengeful spirit. Captain Barry was present, but was not permitted to take a plaster cast of the head and face of Winiata.
