Major-General Sir Evelyn Wood, who is to command one of the brigades, and Major-General Sir E. B. Hamley, who has been appointed to the command of the second division of the British army in Egypt, have embarked for that country.
It is reported that the Lords are determined to adhere to the amendments made in committee in the Irish Arrears of Rents Bill. Both Houses of Parliament now stand adjourned, but it is understood they will he reconvoked for Saturday, the 19th inst.
Consols remain at par. The Bank rate remains at 3 per cent., and the market rate at 2». The total reserves in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £11,250,000, or £1,159,000 less than on Thursday. Large withdrawals of gold are now being made from the Bank of England for Italy. New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations : —Five per cent. 10-40 Loan, 107-?[; Five per cent. 1889 Loan, 107. Colonial breadstnffs are quiet, but steady at last quotations. The Homeward Australian mails, via Brindisi, which left Melbourne on June 20th, ware delivered here to-day. The Australian cricketers commenced a match to-day at Clifton against Eleven of Gloucestershire. The latter went in first, and were all disposed of for 108 runs. The bowling of the Australians was dead on the wickets, and their opponents were unable to make any stand against it. At the close of the day’s
play the Australian’s had six wickets down for 191. Their play wan excellent, and was much admired. The weather was fine, and a capital wioket was pitched, tho ground being in good order.

LONDON, August 4, 6.10 a.m. The Lords’ amendments on the Irish Arrears Bill are to he considered by the House of Commons on Tuesday.
The Tory party generally support the war policy of the Government. Owing to false and defamatory reports having been sent by tho representatives of certain sections of the Press from the seat of war, the number of correspondents permitted to watch operations is strictly limited, and stringent conditions have been imposed on them. A meeting between the Emperors of Germany and Austria has been arranged to take place on the Bth inst. Cetewayo is to visit Her Majesty at Osborne shortly.
