BOARD OF EDUCATION.
An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs J. Inglis (ohairman, S. O. Farr, A. H. Cunningham, 6. Booth, H. W. Porymau, H J. Tanored, H. B. Webb, and Bev. O. Fraier. A diiousiion ensued on e. motion that works amounting to £2O should be tendered for. The ohairman would take steps to remedy the waste of tim-s in oases where day labor was employed, and would make inquiries in the work referred to, and the motion was withdrawn.
Mr Farr then moved—" That a building committee be appointed to arrange for and consider all requirements cenneoted with school buildings generally throughout the district, to examine all plans and specifications before tenders are invited for the execution of such works, and supervise all financial matters connected with contracts; snoh committee to meet the day previous to each meeting of the Board, in order to prepare a fall report of its proceedings, which shall be submitted to the Board for its sanction or otherwise, the committee to consist of Messrs "
Mr Peryman seconded the motion. Bev. O. Fraser moved—" That the consideration of the matter be deferred to the next meeting of the Board," and Mr Cunningham seconded this. After discussion,
The Bev. O. Fraser having withdrawn his amendment, the resolution was; put and declared lost on the casting vote of the ohairman.
It was reported that the various applications and testimoniali of the candidates for 'the position of n'ohitect were oiroulated amongst the members of the Board for their consideration.
The tenders for school buildings, &o, at liauriston, Darfield, and South Malvem ware then opened, and it was agreed: to leave the acceptance of tenders for the first two in the chairman's handu, for South Malvern the tender of Mr Taylor, £596, was accepted. A letter from the Eduoation Department was read in reply re compulsory schools, stating that if certain clauses of th. 3 Aofc wero brought into force, th-'re would be no need to establish compulsory schools. Mr Allard's salary was incroased to £175 per annum from the Ist August, on the recommendation of the ohairman.
The nee of a room in the Normal Sohool "was granted for the use of the Teachers' Institute.
Mrs Patterson haviug resigned the position of heid mistress of the Normal Sohcol, it was agreed tbat Miss Janet Grossman end Miss Christina Henderson act in the capacity in the morning and afternoon respeatively till Mrs Patterson's successor be appointed ; and it was also resolved that the recommendation of Mr Maloolm, to the effect thctjiho Bev.Oanon Daniels, of the Btttersea Training College, London, and the Bev. James Ourrie, of the Church of Sootland Training College, Edinburgh, be written to, asking them to laleot a head mistress to fill the vacancy.
The Board then went into oc mmittoe, and on resuming adjourned.
