LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of this Counoil was held on Monday night. Present—Ors. Beed (in the chair), Smith, Weyburne, Ohalmerß, Stinson, Girfortb, Webb, Grubb. The rereceipts since its praoeding meeting were £l7O 13s lOd. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office, forwarding a oopy of the Dangerous Goods Act, and was ordered to be acknowledged. The letter acknowledging Council's resolution about the elec:rio light was read from the secretary to tho Harbor Board, who Btated it would be considered at the first meeting of the Board. Mrs Leslie asked permission to put up an addition to the Highland Home lodging house. It was resolved that she must comply with the by-law which requires briok, stone, cr oonorete to be used. Or. Smith thought the inspector of buildings should look out that the Act was not being contravened elsewhere. Aocounts amounting to £173 17s Id were passed for payment. Three tenders for supplying kerosene were opened. One offering it at 2s 2d was found to be unsigned. G. Maokay's offer was 2s 2d for Davoe's, or other equal brand, and T. Meraon's 2s4'» Maokay's tender was accepted, the oil to be Devoe's. A considerable discussion ensued upon the return of a destitute family to the borough, the father of whom had left good work in Ohristchurch. Several instances of glaring imposture by oharitable aid patrons were deto-nted Epon. Cr. Webb thought some of them should bo refused, with a view to forcing them into the hands of the polioe. Cr. Webb was added to the charitable aid committee. Cr. Chalmers was added to the bathing committee, and Cr. Stinson chairman. Or. Webb expressed his astonishment that the Council's lawyer did not appear to prose cute in the recent case against those who put out the lamps lately, also at the remarks made by tho B.M. who adjudicated upon the case. The foreman of works reported that he intended prosecuting the owners of iomo pigs whioh were not properly fenced in along the Bumner road. After soma further disoussion, the Council adjourned until the 14*.h instant, when a special meeting is to be held to consider the question of diverting J »ckson's road
