A company has been formed here, with a capital of £750,000, to purchase the businesses of Hart and Go., Duffield and Co., Cowan and Co., and Morgan, Connor and Clyde. The concern will be styled the Adelaide Milling and Mercantile Company, the whole of which capital has been subscribed.

| PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NAPIER, July 81. The woolshed on the Chesterhopo Station has been destroyed by fire. The building was observed to be all right on Saturday night, but on Sunday morning was discovered to be a heap of ruins. It is insured in the Union Office for £3OO, but the building com tainrd uninsured property, consisting ot grass teed, farm implements, sheepskins, Ao., valued at between £3OO and £4OO. _ The origin of the fire is unknown, and it _ is feared to have been the work of an incendiary. _ NELBOBT, July 31. The Bay View Hotel on the Wakapuaka road was destroyed by fire at 6 80 last night. It was occupied by Mr Fooden, who noticed a strong smell of burning, and in searching opened a door under the staircase, when fltaes broke out. Ih? furniture is almoal
completely destroyed. The origin is a My tery. Th« license was allowed to lapse at the last meeting of the Licensing Court. The building is insured in the Norwich Union office for £3OO, and the furniture in the same office for £2OO. DUNEDIN, July 31.
Mr Mills has received a cablegram stating that David Hintoul, second engineer of the Wakatipu, has been killed by falling among the engines the day after leaving Wellington, He was literally smashed to pieces. His remains were buried at sea. _He leaves a widow in Dunedin, but no family. His life is insured in the Government office for £2OO, under the company’s rule compelling seagoing officers to insure for amounts according to their rank.
A fire was discovered early yesterday morning in the cellar of Thomas McGill, draper, of the Arcade. A constable first saw the fire, whilst McGill, who was on the premises, was not cognisant of it. With assistance the fire was soon extinguished. The stock, &0., is insured for £2OOO, equally divided in the New Zealand and National companies. McGill states the value of his stock ranges between £I9CO and £2IOO. A quantity of oiled wrappings, rags, &0., were discovered on fire in such a position as led the police to arrest McGill.
The damage by rain in the immediate neighborhood of Dunedin is slight. On the flat, several houses are under water, and one severely damaged by landslips. A serious landslip at the Chain Hills tunnel detained the southern trains fully four hours. At ;< northern line, a serious landsli ; tool p lace,, which will be cleared to-day. Between Clarkesville and Milton a good deal of damage has been done to the line. The Lawrence branch suffered a good deal. Pas sengers bad to leave the train at Johnston, and proceed on foot to Waitahuna, where hotel accommodation was provided. The late Port Chalmers train did not reaob town till yesterday morning. The Taieri river overflowed its banks and the plain is an immense lake.
In Campbell v Campbell, an application for divorce on the ground of cruelty and adultery, a decree nisi was granted. The respondent failed to appear, but subsequently the whole matter was allowed to stand over till Friday, when the question of the custody of the child will be discussed.
