ABHBURTON RACING CLUB.
The adjourned annual general meeting of the above club was held at Quill's Commercial Hotel on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of members, and Mr M. Friedlander was voted to the ohair. The Secretary, Mr J. O. Bell, read the annual report and balance-sheet, the latter, showing a oredit balanoe in favor of the club to date of £lB Oi 83, The report stated that many inquiries had been made as to whether the olub intended to hold a spring meeting or not, and in consequence of that the annual general meeting of members had been called earlier than usual, and it also recommended that a two days' spring meeting be held. It also stated that the financial position of the club was highly satisfactory, but that theie would be a heavy strain on its resources during the coming season for many much needed improvements to the oourse, and the question ! of the erection of a grand stand would have to bo considered at some future date. The eleotion of offioers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows: —President, Mr B. G. Wright (re-elected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs John Grigg and W. C. Walker j judge, Mr Stitt; treasurer, Mr Fooks ; clerk of the course, Mr B. Saunders; clerk of the so&les, Mr M. Friedlander; starter, M. Orawley ; stewards —Messrs R. Friedlander, E. S. Coster, L. E. Crosbie, O. H. Dowding, Dr. Ross, W. Saunders, and H. D. Winter; oommittee — Messrs E. G. Crisp, R. Friedlander, L. E. Crosbie, Dr. Leahy, Dr. Ross, S. and W. Saunders, Stitt, Isaao Thompson, and J. Wilkie.
The appointment of o secretary, defining duties, and fixing salary to be paid was left in the hands of the committee.
Mr R. Friedlander proposed—" That a spring meeting, comprising two days' racing, be hold this season."
The motion was seconded by Mr Fooks.
The chairmen drew attention to the proposal that the Grand National Steeplechase meeting should be held in Ashburton next autumn, and would like the meeting to consider this might interfere with the A.R O. holding both a spring and autumn raoe meeting as well. The members presoat were of opinion that the proposed events would not clash, and on Mr R. Friedlander's motion being put it was oarried unanimously. The question of fixing the date of the spring meeting, together with all details connected therewith, was left with the committee.
A proposition that the annual subscription to the Ashburton Baoing Olub be reduoed to one guinea, instead of two guineas as at present, was lost by a large majority. The Chairman callsd attention to the advisableness of the olub purchasing a totalisator at once, so that it might be used at the Hunt Club's meeting on the 10th of August. The suggestion met with general approval, and on the motion of Mr Wilkie, seconded by Mr Fooks, it was resolved—" That the committee be authorised to purohaie a totalisator forthwith."
A letter was read from Mr Crawley, secretary to tho Hunt Club, requesting the use of the race course for the Hunt Club's meeting on August 10th. It was resolved that the request be granted on the usual conditions. Attention was called to the necessity of procuring a room for the sole use of the club, and it was decided that it be a recommendation to the committee to invite tenders for the use of a room for olub purposes. This concluded the business, and the meeting adjourned.
