[PBB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, July 14. Captain Johnstan committed suicide at Baginn on Thursday, by shooting himself through the heart. He had been in al >w state of mind since the death of a favorite daughter two months ago. He wrote an obituary notice for the “Star” before committing the rash act. Asher Wren, formerly canvassing clerk for the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company, was arrested at Obaupo, Waikato, on a charge ,of embezzling tbs funds of the company. James Martin Shepherd, the levantor, after leaving Auckland by the outward mail steamer for ’Frisco, remained in Honolulu for one or two trips, and then proceeded to San Francisco. Accordir gto his own account he lodged at the Palace Hotel, where he was constantly drunk for fivo weeks. How bo got on board the mail s'eamer hero he does not exactly know, but he states he intended to surrender on his arrival, and farther alleges he wished to do so to save another man, who was supposed to be implicated in the transaction, but who is innocent. All the prisoner’s luggage is labelled for Christchurch, and that foot in some measure boars out his statement. Shepherd was brought up at the Police Court charged with forging and uttering, and remanded to Titnaru. In the divorce case of Snowden v Snowden and Flavell there was no appearance of the respondent and the co-respondent. The ease was clearly i roved, and a decree nisi made for dissolution of the mirriage. The co-respondent was adjudged to pay costs. The husband and wife are half-castes. By the City of New York thirteen wellbred American trotting horses arrived, in charge of J. Kerr. For one of the animals 20,000d01a was paid some time ago. Their destination is Nelson. Miss L. Davenport, a passenger by the mall steamer for Sydney, is expected to visit Auck land before returning to America. At Denton’s closing lecture last night numbers were unable to obtain admission to the hall. He left by the mail steamer for Sydney. Edward Walker, a laborer, while at bin meal, Onehunga, was seized with a fit and expired immediately. The Bussell police authorities made a seizure of llOlbs of tobacco at the loading ground. A warrant was issued for a person named Cox for smuggling the same. The Nelson has taken in 100 tons of coal. Measles have shown themselves aboard, Digley, one of the officers, being attacked. NAPIER, July 24. The nominations for the Hurdle, Spring, and Flying Handicaps, Hawke’s Bay Jockoy Club Spring Meeting, close at eight o’clock to-morrow evening. TIM ABU, July 24. Mr James Bruce’s new flour mills, just at a cost of some £15,000, are to be lighted by electric light. The Jows will call a public meeting to take steps to raise subscriptions for the distressed Russian Jews.

At the Police Court to day, Williamson and Ahern, two lads, were committed for trial for burglary at the “Daily Times ” office. Jones, who was arrested at Waimate, turned Queen’s evidence, and ho will be charged next F riday. The Carpenters’ Society only paid £6 to unemployed tradesmen last quarter. Some quarters it has amounted to £92. The people at Qlendermid, where the name of the railway station was recently painted out, have memorialised Parliament to change the name to the original one, Sawyers’ Bay. The Harbor Board to-day decided to prepare and telegraph to the Government a statement showing the financial position of the Board, and to urge the Government to continue their assistance in passing the Loan Bill. A telegram was received from Mr Fish, M.H.8., advising the consideration of the desirability of suspending operations in view of the Bill not passing, and during the discussion Mr K. Wilson, merchant, said that rather than see the dredging operations now going on on the bar stopped he was prepared to pay out of bis own pocket the dredge’s
working expenses for a month. He added that ho would find little difficulty in getting other business men in the city to follow his example. .... The Lohengrin, from Liverpool, the hope of which had almost been given up, she having been out 140 days, arrived to-day all well.
