CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
A notable addition will shortly be made to the new buildings recently erected for business purposes in Ohristchuroh in the shape of Messrs Uilner and Thompson's new mue<o warehouse. This building, whioh will cover the site reoently occupied by Mr Wood, saddler, in High street, will cover an area of 66ft by Sift, acd will be three storoys in height, the parapet being 55ft from the ment. The ground 'floor, 14ft in height, will contain shop, private offices, box offices for theatrical purposes, strong room, and lift for oonveying goods to the top of the building. Access to the first floor will be gained by a staircase «ft wide, with wings on eaoh side and oarved newels at foot. From the first landing on this staircase aooeas is gained to a handsomely decorated reoese, in the back wall of which is a large oircular headed window, 13ft by Gft, with aide lights of stained glass 9ft Sin by 2ft. The large window uto be filled in with stained glass, bearing figures symbolical of music. The glass for these windows will be supplied by the celebrated firm of Heaton, Butler and Bayne, London. Tha showroom on this'floor is 16!t high, and the walla will be decorated in plaster work, the eide walls with plaster and aroadicg, and the back and front walls with plaster pateras and medallions of Beethoven and Mozart over the doorways. Tha lighting will be effeoted by gas brackets from eaoh pier, and also by the eleotrio light, the dynamo maohine to supply whioh will be driven by a gas engine by Oroasley. -From this floor an iron spiral staircase leads to the storey above. A dado of panelled work goes all round this room 3ft high, forming the pedestal to pilasters whioh ara ornamented with fluting and Corinthian caps. The oeiling is panelled, with rich eornioe and oentre< flawers in eaoh panel. There will -be large windows, front and back, in both the upper storeys. The elevation of the front will have a singularly bold and striking appearanoe. The material used from ground to first floor will be ornamental blucstone ; two cast iron columns <wiil also help to support the neoessary girders. The shop front will be of carved and polished cedar and plate glass, with-door in the centre, while an ornamental iron verandah, running along the front, will give it a very elegant appearance. The principal feature above the ground flaor is a large window, in shape like an organ, with carved pilasters and string mouldings, forming a projecting balconetteof white stone, with columns of red polished Peterhead granite. Two fluted .pilasters rnn up each side of the window, the whole height of the building ending in the parapet. There will be a window on each side of the organwindow. On the second floor will be three windows, with columns of polished .grey granite, and white stone tops,, Over the oentre one will appear medallions of Haydn and Weber, while in the panel on baleonette is Mendelssohn, in a reclining position. The oornice will be deep, projecting, and handsomely ornamented with carving and other delicate work. Burmounting everything is the parapet, in form of a balustrading, and finished on either side by the break of the pilasters mentioned before. These will be surmounted by representations of the ancient Lyre, in stone, and in the oentre, over the main window, stands a pedestal, on whioh is to be ereoted the figure of Apollo, holding in his band the eleotrio light. The plans have been drawn by Mr F. Stronts, and it is in- • tended that the building shall be completed ' by the end of the year.
