Oommittee—Messrs B. Coup (chairman), E. Parnham, O. Young, J. Stevenson, W. M. Hoes, H, Elder, J. Walls, W. McGregor, B. Wilnon, T. Psshhy, W. D. Humphreys end J. Lowthian Wilson
The twenty-fourth annual ploughing competition promoted by the Farmers' Association, and the nineteenth held within the ken of the writer of this notice, took plane on Friday last in a paddock lent by Mr Edwin Parcbam, on Ohoka road, near taWb. The attendance of ploughmen compared withprevious was well maintained. The land was a level grass paddock, and was the same in which a noted ploughman, now in the North Island, Mr Donald Gantts, lest ploughed in, The sward was in good order for cutting, yet the farrow when turned presented a rather broken face, attributable to the rich loamy nature of the soil. The land lay close and dry enough to put the teams on their mettle. All the competitors, with two exceptions, turned up, and by ten o’clock ploughing bad begun in earnest. The usual conditions obtaining at these matches were in force, with the addition of a rule the object of which was to prevent what is technically called “ false out,” and the committee having adopted the same, created somewhat of a commotion among the ploughmen who had been playing fast and loose with this rule 'by cutting across the furrows and firmly refused to give prizes for work in which unfair ploughing was detected. The quantity of land allotted to each single implement was half an acre, and the doublefurrow ploughs an extra quarter of an acre. The work was to be cot less than Sin. deep, each man beginning on the left of bis ground and going four times round his feering, and scattering the remainder. A substantial thumb lunch was provided by the proprietor of the land, and the committee and judges lunched in a tont belonging to Mr A. Piper, licensee Kaikaicui Hotel. There were on the ground several itinerant amusement vendors, who did a fair trade. Throughout the day the members of the committee were active in the discharge of their duties. The quality of the work was well up to the average of former years. The tho teams brought out were very fiueW especially so those referred to in the prize i.eu, *>- and the farmers of the district may well be preud of the draught stock shown, which for style end substance are not to be beaten in any other part of the colony.
