Williama was csmmittedfor trial, at the next secsiors of the Supremo Court, on several charges of embrzzlernentof moneys belonging to the Railway Department, Christchurch. A.O.F.— Tbe usual Par-anui Court meeting was held at the Library, Fapanni. Xhere waca good attendance of members. A letter was read from Bro. Brown, tendering his resigna tion as assistant secretary. Bro. A. Lacgdowne was e?ec'.cd in his stead. After the principal business was transacted, the Court adjourned to harmony, when several gocd songs were sung. One new member wa» initiated into the order. The G.B. closed the Court in due form.
Concebt.—The Christchurch Amateur Orchestral Society gave a ooncert last evening at the Oddfellows' Hall. She programme inoluded eleven numbers, eight of which were instrumental and three vocal. The concert throughout was a very enjoyable one, all the items being rendered excellently. Messrs Knox and Button conducted, and Mr J. Coomba led ; Mr B. T. Searell acting at gocompanyist. Thmpebanob or Ashbuhtqn.—At a meeting of the members of St. Stephen's Church, held on Wednesday evening, it was resolved to form a temperance society in connection with the church, and a committee w&aeleoted to carry out the details. Mr Ferriman was elected secretary and treasirer, and a cumber of signatures were added, both to the total abstinence and temperance pledges.

K. H. Wyatt has decided to decline the appointment to Kaiapoi. There is no doubt that his decision has been largely influenced by the expression of his parishioners' wisheß as conveyed to him in a numerously-signed memolist. . Kaiapoi Uhited Cbioket Ootb. a general meeting of members has been convened for this evening at the Municipal Chambers, when the question of leasing or purchasing of a recreation ground will bo considered. It is hoped that there Will be a full attendance, not only of the club, but others interested in obtaining a sports ground for the town. . U.A.O.D.—In answer to a cironlar issued by Mr De Bonis a large number of members of the above order m6t at the Terminus Hotel on Wednesday evening last, for the purpose of taking into consideration the advisability of forming a band in connection with the Order. Mr H. E. Bowe was appointed secretary pro tern About twenty of those present signified their willingness to Join by subscribing their names to the list. After a few preliminaries had been dealt with, the meeting adjourned until Wednesday week.
Cohobbt at Oxfobd. —A concert was held in the Eist Oxford Town Hall on Wednesday evening, in aid of the family of John Horne, who was murdered on the railway some time ago. There was a very large attendance, and the reoeipts were estimated at £25. After the musical portion the Amateur Dramatic Company played " Used up," the abilities of the company being well displayed, and reflecting great credit on the stage. The chair was occupied by the Bev. J. Sheldon. Kaiapoi Parish.—On Thursday afternoon & meeting of the vestry and the Church Work Society was held in the Munioipal Chambers, the Bev. D. O. Hampton presiding, to decide upon arranging for a festival and sale of work made by the ladies, proposed to be held in the Oddf .Hows' Hall on the anniversary of the date of the conseoration of the Church. Provision was made for a display of the wares for sale, for the exhibition of curious articles, and a concert in the evening, when the meeting then adjourned. WADDiHaroir School—A meeting called by Mr John Jebson in response to a requisition from the householders, was held at Waddington in the schoolroom, on Wednesday evening, to inquire into the cause of the non-appointment of a schoolmaster for the district school; Mr Jebson was in the chair. The proceedings were of a most disorderly character, personalities being freely bandied about. A resolution was proposed which was not put the meeting, the chairman's action in the matter not pleasing a large number present. At this stage the majority left the room, when an amendment was oarried—"That this meeting fully endorses the committee's action in recommending a master, and that the Board of Eduoation be requested to confirm the same ; also that the resolution be forwarded to the Board." The squabble is that the Board refuse to confirm a recommendation made by the looal committee two months cr more ago. Another meeting will be held shortly to protest against the chairman's Bction.
Aogidhbt—An accident happened yesterday to an apprentice named Robert Johnston, employed at Mr A. J. White's furniture warehouie. The lad was working the carding machine and accidentally got his fingers in the rollers. He was immediately taken to lihe Hospital, where he had to hare one of his -fingers taken off Bhasd Holt's "Wobld."—This spec taoular drama, which has had such* sucoes if ul (Season in Dnnedin, will have its first presentation in Ohristchnrob, at the Theatre Boyal, on Monday, the 81st init. Mr Montague Browne, the business manager of the company, arrived in town last night to complete arrangements to that end. MbbitaiiE Sunday Sc-hool.—The above school will be re-opened on Sunday next. Biskhb.—The Central Hotel, Ashburton, having recently changed hands and gone into the possession of Mr John Beocher, late of Akaroa, that gentleman resolved to celebrate the event by asking bis friends to meet and dine with him at his new establishment on Wednesday evening last. Between sixty and seventy gentlemen responded to the invitation, and-had the pleasure of being entertained in a most hospitable way and sitting down to a ■repast served in a manner that reflected the highest credit on the worthy hoot, and alas in a manner that augurs well for the future conducting of the hotel and the general welfare of its patrons. The chair was occupied by Mr St. Hill.; Mr Branson, of Ashburton, and Mr Kirk, of Kirk and Oompton, Christohurcb, filling the vice chairs. Dinner over and the usual loyal and other toasts disposed of, Mr Kirk, as an old friend cf seventeen years' standing, proposed, in a few well chosen words, the health of Mr Baecher, speakirg in high terms of, praise of the manner in which Mr Beecher had always conducted his business, and said he could assure the inhabitants of Ashburton that in Mr Beecher they would always find a most genial, honorable and obliging host. The toast was heartily responded to and drunk with musical honors. Mr Beecher briefly responded, expressing his pleasure at seeing-so many present, and assuring them that he would do his best to . conduct the hotel at all times in a thoroughly efficient and honorable way. Other toasts ■ followed, and -some capital songs were ren- . dered at interval;, the guests separating at a late hour, having thoroughly enjoyed them- ■ selves, and become deeply impressed with the .genial hospitality of their worthy host and future fellow-townsman. From the evidence it appeareu that, on Sunday afternoon last, the deceased was playing with a marble, whioh he put into his mouth, when it got into his threat ana ohoked him. Hvery effort was made by tne father of the child to extrioate the marble, dui without success. Dr SiDgleton, of Akaroa, made a pest mortem examination, and iouna the marble in the ohild's throat. A verdict of " Accidental death" was returned. Yotog Men's Club.—A meeting of tne above was held last night at the City Council Chambers. Present —The Very Bev. tbs Dean of Ohristohuroh, Bevs. O. Eraser, I. Flavell, Messrs J. B. Maroh, 0. Bean, W. Shaw and Levy. His Worship the Mayor ocoupied the chair. The Dean, commenting on the small attendance, said he thought tne beßt course under the circumstances would m to adjourn till a future date, and that in tne meantime efforts should be made to obtain a fuller meeting. He moved that at its rising the meeting be adjourned till Thursday, July 27th, at 4 p.m. The Bev. O. Eraser seconded the motion. He took the opportunity to contradiot a rumour that had got about to the effect that the Board of Governors of Canterbury College were opposed to the various professors lecturing to this or similar societies. On the contrary, they would give every encouragement to the movement. The Bev. Mr Flavell spoke in the same strain. Mr Oorfe and Mr Miller had expressed to him their willingness to place their services at the disposal of the club. The motion was carried. Mr Levy was appointed secretary pro tem, vice Mr Flavell resigned. It was resolved to issue circulars to gentlemen likely to take an interest in the club, inviting them to attend at the proposed meeting. Votes of thanks to Mr Flavell for his services in promoting the movement, and to the Mayor for the use of the room, terminated the proceedings.
