THE YOUNG MEN'S CLUB.

We are glad to observe that the comEiittee, to whom has been committed the task of reporting npon the steps to be taken in forming a younglmen's club, has discharged it on a broad and liberal basis. Some little time ago we pointed out the objections which, as it seemed to ns, stood in the way of the project being a success as then proposed. The proposition simply meant that all who joined the institution would be at once ear-marked as larrikins. How any gentlemen could expect young men to do this we do not know, and therefore we feel pleasure in noticing from the report of the committee that this objectionable element has been removed. Judging from the proposals to be laid before the meeting to-night, we should say that the success of the movement is assured. What is wanted is that our permanent citizens, men who take an active interest in all movements having for their object the welfare and progress of the city, should oome forward and give the benefit of their help. Chrißtchutch, of all the New Zealand cities, is peculiarly barren of rational amusement for the young men who are employed in shops, &a. The musical societies and other kindred associations are in the hands of one particular section of the community. Ostensibly public, they are in reality little private cliques. The formation of such an institution as the one now projected will enable musical and dramatic organisations te be established where persons who, though perhaps gently born, have the misfortune to be in trade, can meet together without tbe introduction of that abominable class distinction which has had the effect of destroying every particle of sociality in Ohristchurch. In this respect then, apart from the undoubted influence for good which a Young Men's Club must exercise, we gladly welcome the advent of euch an institution, and trust that the meeting of to-night will result in its being ['started on a sound and successful basis.
