OHBISTOHUBOH. Thursday, July 20. [Before J Ollirier, Esq.,'B. of., and R. Westenra, Esq., J.P.] Dbunkbnnbss. John Nixon, who has become somewhat notorious by the peculiar circumstances of bis case, was again brought up charged with having been found drunk on the previous night a« Sydenham. Accused is already under the operation of the prohibition clause of the Licensing Aot as regards three hotels in Christohurch which be had been in the habit of frequenting. With a few reaiarks as to his persistently drunken habits, the Bench sentenced Nixon to be imprisoned for one month, and to be kept at hard labor. He was warned, moreovor, that if he came up again he would receive a much heavier sentenoe. Thomas P&rdoe was fined 20a, and ordered to pay Is, the hire of the cab whioh oonvoyed him to tho look up.
Leaving a Wife without Maintenance.—John "Robert Niohols, a bootmaker, was oharged by his wife Emma, with the above offence. After a three hours' hear rip, the Bench said they thought a more shameful case had never been beforo the Court. The defe -.riant, a very young man connected with, and an active member of various religious societies, had, after only a few months of marriage, treated his wife in a most cruel and cowardly manner. An order was made, defendant to pay 10s per week to his wife, lo find sureties for the due payments of that sum, and to pay costs and expenses of three witnesses, if such costs are allowed by the Act.
