Aocedbkt at Lyttbxton.—John Brymer, an apprentice on board the barque Oregon, and about sixteen yeans of age, was found this morning in the fore-hold of the vessel, into whioh it is supposed he had fallen sbont two ! ours before he was discovered. He was taken to the casual ward, where Dr. H. Macdonald examined him, and found he had ■Detained concussion of the brain, and there was a severe aoalp wound over the light temple, doubtless the result of falling eighteen feet upon the coal lying in the hold. The injuries are not considered to be fatal, and at last accounts he was doing as well as could be expected.

Sudden Death.—This morning, about ten o'clock, an infant named Emily Morrison, aged about three months, died at its parents recidence in Oasbel street East. The mother states that it has been sickly from its birth, and that this morning at eight, o'clock it£ symptoms being dangerous, Dr. Grathre was sent for, but the little one died before his arrival. Same of the neighbours were present at the time. Essidbht Magistbate's Coitbt.—At the Beddent Magistrate's Court this morning the only police case brought forward wa« that of a man, who, for being drunk, his first offence, was fined ss. Mr Ollivier was on tbo bench. On the civil side, judgments went for plaintiffs by default in Hamilton v Monkman, £1; and Jacobson Bros, v Piper, £ls 15s. Knowsley v i'raw was adjourned till Augußt 19th, Kirkpatrick v Scott till July 19 ih. Lyttelton Magistbate's Cor/ax.—The only business at the Ooutt this morning was one charge of ombf zzlement preferred against 0. H. Elmos, by Lingdown and Judge, the sum alleged to have been taken being stated as £2 15s Bd. Mr Izird appeared to proseoute, and Mr H. N. Haider for the defendant.. An application for a remand to the 26th inst. was granted. The question of bail then osme up, and the J. P., Mr J. W. Smith, said he thought if accused was bound for £IOO and found two sureties of £SO eaoh that would be sufficient. Mr Izard thought a heavier bail should be required, as though the sum alleged to have been taken was small, there was a suspicion of further defalcations. The Bench made the biil, accused in £2OO and two sureties of £IOO eaoh. Fabhweix Social Gathhbikg.—a moil enjoyable ball aud supper, projected by a few friends of the promoters and the British and foreign exhibitors at the International Exhibition, took place last evening at the Oddfellows' Hall. The hall was prettily decorated with pot plants, &c. ( the stage being converted into an elegant drawing-room. About one hundred were present, exclusive of the invited guosta, and dancing commenced shortly after half-past eight to tho music of Mr Schwartz's band. At the end of the first part of the programme an adjournment was made to the supper room, where Mr Messenger had provided a most recherche supper, the tables being beautifully decorated, and the bill of fare thoroughly excellent. Hie Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and Messrs O. F. Haibert and E. Strange the vice chairs. After supner, his Worship proposed the toasts of "Her Majesty tho Queen," and "Oar Guests." M, Joubert and Mr A. T. Edwards responded to the latter in excellent speeches, speaking in high terms of the kindly hospitality extended to them during their stay in Ohristchnrch. Dancing was then resumed, and kept up to an early hour. Aghhoy Company, Limitbd.—We understand that at a meeting of shareholders of the above company, held in London on the 12th May last, the chairman announced that the lervioes of Mr Joseph Palmer and the Hon. J. T. Peacock had been scoured as a board of advioe, in conjunction with Mr Btead and Mr Cunningham. Bbookubb Sohooii Committbb. —A meeting of the above committee was held in the (Schoolroom on Thursday last. Present —Mr Holland (in the chair), Messrs Buckley, B. Withell, Russel, H. Lear, A. Mackay. Corirespondenoe was read from the Board of -Eduoation, stating that the annual examination by Mr Edge was postponed till Ist August. The applications far the post of mistress were then considered, and the committee decided to appoint Miss Blake, of Templeton, subject to the approval of the Board. After disouasing sundry matters the meeting then adjourned. L.0.L., Coobtbhay.—The anniversary of the 12th of July was oelebrated by the above lodge in the Orange Hall, Oourtenay, by a tea, concert, and ball, and, as usual in former years, wsa a great lucoess. The tea tables were presided over by the Messrs MoNae, Bobertson, White, and Hay, and Mesdames Stevenson and Osborne. After tea the concert commenced, the Rev. Mr Burnett, aided by the W.M. Bro. Dysort, occupying the chair. The programme, whioh comprised solos; duets, and readings, diversified by several songs in oharaoter by Mr Kerr, who was repsatedly encored, was gone through in an admirably pleasing manner. After the concert dancing commenced, Mies Bowler presiding at the pianoforte, and was kept up till an early hour, everyone seemingly well pleased with the evening's amusement.

Tempbbanch Lboiure—Under the auspices of the Ohriatohuroh Wesleyan Improvement Association, there was delivered last evening, in the Durham street schoolroom, a lecture by Dr. Byder Tivy, entitled " Temperance : What is it 1" There was a good attendance, and the ohair was occupied by the Bev. B. Best, president of the association. The leotnre, which was a clear, concise, and interesting statement concerning the physiological effects of alcohol on the human system, was listened to with marked attention, and frequently applauded daring the course of its delivery. At the conclusion of the lecture a vote of thanks, proposed by Mr O. M. Gray and seconded by Mr 11. J. Bout, was carried most heartily, and the meeting was closed with singing and the benediction. Masistbatbs' CotJBT, Kaiapoi.—At this eonrt on Monday, before C. Whitefoord and J. O. Porter, Egqs., B.M.'s, a license to •laughter cattle was granted to S. Clothier. By leave of the court an information laid by H. E. Daniels against Honi Urn for obtaining £1 by false pretences, was allowed to be withdrawn. A. Stone vJ. Staker, £lO, value of a retriever poisoned on land in defendant's occupation. Mr Baiter for plaintiff, Mr Greison for defendant. Evidence was brought showing that plaintiff's dog eat the poison on a reserve leased by defendant, and that the latter was understood to have laid poison for doga to proteot his oheep. The plaintiff's dog was crossing the land in question with him when the affair happened. In consequence of the faot that it was not shown defendant ectually laid the poison, a nonsuit was recorded. XoYAii PbebblEtoh Lodge.—The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal PrcbbEeton Lodge of Oddfellows was held on Wednesday evening last in the schoolroom, when the officers for the ensuing term were installed by Bro. Sohwartz, D.D.G.M.: Bro. Bev. A. O. Wright, BT. O.j Bro. A. G. Forward, V.&.; Bro. W. H. Gomerford, secretary; Bro. G-. Marsh, treasurer. The subordinate officers of the lodge appointed were :—Messrs Watson, &. Adam, W. Prebble, J. Fuller, W. Mullis, J. Smith, and J. Adam. After the installation, Bro. Schwarts gave an interesting address on the progress and future of the Order. A cordial vote of thanks was aocorded to the Bev. A. O. Wright for the gift of a Bibla, and to Mis Wright for her handsome present of a cushion for the Bible. The installing officer congratulated the lodge on the uatisfaotory progress of the lodge in th> dUtriot.

Stdbuham Baptist Chtjboh.—A puhlio meeting was held last evening at the Odd- < fellows' Hall, Sydenham, for the purpose of considering the report of the building committee and to devise means for augmenting the funds. It was stated that the price of the site, belonging to the congregation at the corner of Durham and Bowen streets, was £3OO, and £4OO the estimated cost of the building thereon, which is intended eventually to be used as a tohoolroom. Until) however, they were in a position to ereot a larger building at the corner of the section, it would be used as a ohuroh. Preparations for building were now going on, and it was hoped that* in a few days the foundation stone might be laid. As to ways and means, they had £IOO in hand and promise of £SOO on loan, donations promised of about £3O, leaving about £7O to be provided. To meet the deficiency collecting cards and debenture forms were being distributed. Sermons had been preached on last Sunday by the Bev. J. Hinton, of Wellington, aud Mr E. G. Lewis, the collections at which servioss had produced a good sum, f and the managers had every hope of bringing their undertaking to a buooesiful termination. The meeting was addressed by several gentlemen and was dosed in the usual manner. AOKWOW.LBDGMBHT. —The house Bteward of Ohristchuroh Hospital begs lo acknowledge with thanks the reoeipt of a parcel of newspapers from Mr A. Oarriok, and eighteen pairs of slippers from Mr Harris, for the use of the patients. Abhbtjbton B.M. Court.—At this Court on Monday, before Messrs T. Bullook and B. Alcorn, J P.'s, J. Ibell was charged with drunkenness and violently resisting the police, and also with damaging the arresting constable's clothes. Ibell being an old offender, the Bench sentenced him to fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labor. Kaiapoi. Ohcboh —It is intended to hold a confererioe between the memberß of the restry and the ladies of the sewing bee here on Thursday, in reference to holding a oon- ' versazione in aid of various funds for church purposes Abhbttbtok Salbyabds Company.—A company is being formed under the title of the Ashburton Btook and County Salejards Company, Limited, for the purpose of taking over and enlarging the present ealeyards, and also for erecting yards on the south side of the Ashburton river. TLA.O.D., Kaiapoi. —The requisite number of intending members having signed the application for a chartor to form a Druids' Lodge at Kaiapoi, the same will be forthwith presented, and steps taken to bring this branch of this society into existence. The first-named horse broke from the trot several times, and the grey pony won by about fifty yards on reaching Bangiora.

Sydbnkam PotriiTsx Bocibtt.-—A meeting of the Sydenham Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society was held last night in the Oddfellows' Hull, Sydenham. Present —His Worship the Mayor of Sydenham, president (in the chair), Messrs Watt, Bo we, Johu•tone, Deal, Pickett, Peeble, Markley, Jones (treasurer), ani the secretary. The secretary read a letter in reply, from, tho Colonial Secretary, stating that in his opinion an art union for poultry oould not be allowed, and referrmg the society to the Act. The secretary stated that, on rooeipt of this letter, he bad written to Mr W. White, pointing out that recently the Ohristohuroh Sooiety had boan allowed to hold an wt union of a nimilar kind. Mr White had replied, promising to use his endeavors to have the required concession granted. The treasurer reported a balance in hand of £2O, and that Mr Briggs, on behalf of the P&ES3 Company, had, with •everal others, promised funds for special prizes. A. committee was appointed to arrange with the I hristohurch Sooiety for the hire of show pens for the forthcoming show on August 9th and 10lh next, and with a vote of thanks to the chairman, the nee ting adjourned till Monday next, July 21th,

Waimakabibi Habbob Boabd.—On Monday Mr Henry John Day, oi Km»p<«, wan nominated to fill the vacancy on this Board, to represent the ratepayers of tne Rsngiorsi and Mandevills district, Aahbotitoh Bhabs Basd.—The members of this band gave the first of a series of open air performances on Saturday night, in *» tlD B square, and the musio rendered by the band was listened to with much appreciation by a large number of the general public Kaiapoi Bifle Club— A meeting oi members of the committee of this club was held at the Municipal Chambers on Saturday evening} six members were present, Mr J. Simpson presiding. After considering several routine matters, it waa deoided to oall a general meeting of members for Thursday evening. The committee then adjourned.
