The Government have obtained an injunction from the Law Courts restraining the further proseoution of the works at Dover in connection with the construction of the Channel tunnel. The announcement of the death of Dean Close was premature, and he is still alive j the latest bulletin states that he is improving in health. Two officers of the Czar's body guard, consisting of members of the holy league formed some time since to protect the Czir and neutralise the machinations of the Nihilists, have been arrested on suspicion of being connected with Nihilism. The usual autumn military manoeuvres at Aldershot will not take place this year. Publio opinion in England rejoices that the Frenoh allianoe, which was regarded bs a source of embarrassment, has now virtually collapsed. The " Times," in a leading article, deplores the rivalry existing between the various Australian oolonies, -which it asserts prevents their union on a basis of free trade. Intelligence has been reoeived of the wreok of the Dutch man of war Ander, with a loss of eighty lives. An important new goldfield has beon discovered in the Transvaal. ["AGE" SPKOIAIS.] LONDON, July 4. Anothor Fenian murder is reported from Dublin, the viotim being a man who at one time belonged to the Fenian brotherhood, but who seoeded from it, and thereby incurred the hatred of the organisation whioh compassed his death. Some very severe hailstorms have been experienced in Switzerland. The crops have suffered greatly in consequence, and in some districts have been totally destroyed. In oonsequenoe of the increasing number of undetected murders, the Government have decided to employ bloodhounds to traok the perpetrators of future outrages in Ireland. The Busiian Government have sent aspeoial envoy to Oabul to negotiate with Abdul Rahman for the concession of special oommeroial privileges to Russian subjects. The French military authorities have reintroduced into the army the use of the dram, whioh was discontinued some time ago.
The hostilities which broke out in 1879 between Ohili and the United Bepublios of Bolivia and Peru, have now terminated, the Chilians having evacuated Peru Disputes have again arisen respecting the exaot boundaiies of Northern Afghanistan, which were defined by Earl Granville in October, 1872. It has been agreed to refer their demarkation to the joint decision of England and Bussia.
Irish riots of a serious character have broken out in various parts of the country. At Terdegar, Monmouthshire, the artillery have had to be oalled out, and they are now engaged in quelling the disturbances. The " Times," in a leading article on the fiscal systems in foroe in the different Australian colonies, disputes the statements of Mr Jeff ray in rospeot to the commercial supremacy of Victoria.
