PETITION RE GRAIN CARRIAGE.
The following is the text of the petition to be presented to the House of Representatives by Mr W. F. Pearson, M.H.R., on this subject, signed on behalf of the N.Z. Farmers' 00-operative Association of Canterbury, Limited : " To the Honorable the Speaker and the members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled. " We, the undersigned farmers, beg respeotfully to bring under the notice of your Honorable House tho high rate charged on the railways for carriage of farm produce, whereby wo consider the farmers of New Zealand are unfairly handioapped oompared with other countries. " In asking for a substantial rcduotion we consider we are but asking for justice at your hands, as under the present tariff the rate oi: carriage of farm produce comparen most unfavorably with that charged on other productions of the country, such as coal and timber. " The concessions hitherto made in response to former petitions on thia subject have been totally inadequate, ani the most important industry is still crippled by the high rates demanded. " Tho profit earned by the railways during the grain season is evidence of the unfair taxation to which tho farmers have to submit. "Signed on behalf of 800 shareholders i:n the N.Z, Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Limiltd. "0. Eubob, Chairman."
