SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held at the Council Chambers last right. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs. Pavitt, Andrew, Hall, Forrester, Brown, and Webber. Correspondence waa read—From Railway Department, re a petition from ratepayers, asking for footpath to be formed at the Durham street railway crossing. The Engineer stated that the petition would be forwarded to head quarters. From Mr F. C. Bowler, calling attention to the state of the side channels in Waltham road. Keferred to the works committee. From Mr J. D. Wilson, as to the bad state of Lord Brougham street. This matter was also referred to the works committee. From the Colonial Secretary, re the extension of Gordon street. Received From the Ohristohuroh Drainage Board, in reply to certain recommendations from the Counoil for the better drainage of Battersea Btreet and that locality. The Board declined to accede to the proposals. The letter waa ordered to be received. A petition from thirty ratepayers of Willow Bank, respecting the footpaths in that part of ths borough was referred to the works committee. A letter was read from Mr W. G-. Walkor, asking for payment of half year's salary as clerk to the lioensing committee. The letter was referred to the finance committee-, with instructions to procure information as to the Council's liability in the matter.
I The works committee's report was read. It recommended that certain tenders for supply of shingle and sand be accepted. The foreman of works had been instructed to prooeed with the formation of Smollett's street. Mr Ferguson had been informed that the street in front of his property must be formed and shingled by himcelf before the Council can take it in hand. The Drainage Board had been requested to explain their action in reference to the diversion of water from Colombo road sewer. Other correspondence had been had with the Board aa to the bad state of the roads in consequence of works done by the Board. The Council had now finally informed the Board that if the necessary repairs were not done at once, they would be put in hand by the Council and charged to the Board. A draft agreement between the Council and the Bakaia and Ashburton Forks Bailway Company had been prepared and forwarded to the oompany. An alteration of the regulations as to depositing plana of verandahs with the town olerk was recommended, with a view to remedy occasional cases of inconvenience. The report was adopted. The lighting committee reported they oould not see their way to recommend the ereotion and maintenance of a lamp at the corner of Queen and Lord Brougham streets. The olerk was instructed to reply to Mr Harman's application to that effect. The fire prevention committee recommended that the hand fire engine lent by the London, Liverpool, and Globe Insurance Company in 1879 be returned with thanks, as being out of repair and destitute of hose it was useless to the Council.
The finance committee reported the receipts during the Dast fortnight to have been £5? 10s 4d. the expenditure £389 19s 4d and the credit balance at the Bank on July 17tb, £6S7 19s 7d. The report was reoeived and adopted. The chairman of the finance committee stated that the number of dogs' registrations had steadily decreased during the last four years, thus :—ln 1879 there were 530 ; in 1880, 468; in 1881,471; and in 1882, 391. It was resolved—" That the borough ranger make a house to house inspection in that behalf, in order to see that the revenue was sot being defrauded." At the instanoe of Or. Andrew, the olerk was instructed to procure a copy of the Electric Lighting Bill, to be laid before the Council at its next meeting. After the transaction of some further routine business the Council adjourned.
