Trade daring the past week in most branches has been dull, the only item of any interest being the arrival of the first shipment of the new season’s teas just to hand, the finer sorts of which have been freely quitted Lower grades are to be had very cheap, but stocks of old continue too heavy to lead to much business. Sugars are being pushed off at £3O T os to £32 for from fine to finest whites ; other kinds have bnt trifling sale, and in proportion come much higher. Kerosene has bad more inquiry than formerly at from Is lOd to 2s 2d, according to test. Considerable business has been_ dona in grass seeds, and clovers now fetch improved rates. Salt has seen good business both for fine and coarse, particularly the latter. Candles have had fair sales, hut only at unremunerative rates. A small inquiry has bean noticed for F salmon, stocks of which are rather light. Quotations continue firm at 8a 6d. Bnt little has been done in tobaccos, and that chiefly for twist and nailrod, which remain steady at previous rates. Shipments of bottled ale and stout of good quality just to hind have been freely quitted at fair figures. Spirits have not had much attention, the heavy recent arrivals having supplied most requirements. Dnnvillo’e Irish whisky, however, has been with difficulty secured, stocks bring very light Clarets for the season continue to be freely quitted. Champagne has lately had but little sale, and that •agSfc-fnr the bast qualities. Fencing wire has been in steady demand at full rates, while galvanised iron is with difficulty quitted even at a slight margin over cost.
