ENGLISH &_ FOREIGN. [bEUTEB’S TELEGRAMS/] LONDON, July 12. In the cricket match, the Australians v Marylebono Club, A. P. Lucas, for the latter, scored 45, and was canght. C. T. Stndd was bowled for 114; he played a splendid innings, and never gave a chance. G. B. Stndd l.b.w. for 26. The innings, as already annonncod, closed for a total of 320. Garrett, for the Australians, howled admirably, and took seven out of the ten wickets for 89 runs. In the innings of the Australians following were the highest scorers : —Horan, caught 42 ; Bonnor, stumped, 25 ; Spofforth, bowled, 28 The attendance at the match was very large. July 13. Consols remain at 99£ ; the Bank rate is unchanged at 3 per cent., and the market rate at 2 per cent. New Zealand securities—Five per Cent. 10-40 |Loan, 106 J ; Five per Cent. 1889 Loan, 106 ; Four and a Half per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 103.
Colonial breadstuffs and tallow are without quotable change. A better demand prevails for Australian hides. Beet Scotch pig iron. No. 1, free on hoard in Clyde, is quoted at 52s 6d, being an advance of Is 6d. July 14. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £12,500,000. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,970,000 quarters. There are no changes to report in the money or produce markets. The Sorrentos has arrived, with her frozen meat in good condition. A contractor has undertaken to supply thawed meat direct to the public. July 15. It is known that the Right Hon. John Bright, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, is opposed to the Egyptian policy of his colleagues in the Cabinet, and objected to the bombardment of Alexandria by the British fleet. Later. The Right Hon. John Bright has resigned the Chancellorship of the Duchy of Lancaster, in consequence of a disagreement with his colleagues in regard to their Egyptian policy.
[“Anapa” Specials.] July 13. Cetewayo has started from Capetown for England. Laycock has challenged Ross, and proposes that the race shonld come off at Port Jackson. SUEZ, July 14. The Orient Company’s steamship Lusitania arrived here yesterday from Melbourne (June 7th) with -4500 carcases of mntton and a quantity of beef. Her refrigerating machinery worked splendidly throughout the voyage, and the meat is expected to be in good order.
