THE FORT CHALMERS BAR.
IPBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.] DUNEDIN, July 13,
The harbor master’s monthly report today slated that the soundings taken on tha bar ou the 17th instant showed that the least depth of water in the South Channel was 19 ft Sin at the mean low water level, and the width of the channel at that depth was 200 ft. This was clearly the result of the now dredge’s working, and therefore eminently satisfactory. The s.s. Bowon from Chins, drawing 19ft, crossed the bar at low water without touching on the day on which the soundings were taken. The engineer also reported on tha subject as follows—“ The dredge’s excellent work on the bar, os referred to in the harbormaster’s report was exceedingly encouraging, and during the operations it was seen that the scour materially assisted the deepening. A few weeks’ steady work was evidently all that was required to effect a sufficient depth for the largest draught vessels,”
