BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.

The adjourned annual meeting of the Christchurch Benevolent Association was held yesterday afternoon in the City Council Chambers. Present—Messrs O. T. ilok (in lihe chair), G. Boo’.b, H. Hobday, O. P. Halbert, W. Pratt, W. M. Maekell, H W. Packer, O, Eiver, J, P. Jameson, J. G. Hawkes, B. P. Oroabie ,(«eo ), the Revs. E. A. Mortimer,)T. Flavell, W. A. Pascoe, H. 0. M, Watson, the Very Rev. the Dean of Christ church, and Father Ginaty. The Most Bev. the Primate, Rev. H.. J. O. (Gilbert, and Mr J. Ollivier, wrote apologising for their absence.

Mr W. Pratt stated that the Association ikad received a grant of £863 11s Pd in August last from the Government. At present £250 wag in hand, and the object of the meeting wai to tale steps to raise further funds. The total expenditure to date was £6OO 5s 6d. The Secretary then read a report for the post ten months ended July Stb, 1882, giving details of expenditure, stating that a larger number of oases were now on the hooks than hitherto, and that much more distress is now prevalent than is generally known. Trusting that the public would respond to the appeal about to be made, seeing that much distress would bo alleviated with ite charity under such supervision. The report was adopted. In reply to questions, it was stated that the society*a operations were not arbitrarily limited to any district. That osro was taken to prevent persons being relieved by two benevolent associations. It was suggested that steps should be taken to establish a Central Benevolent Association that should include the present Government Charitable Aid Department. That the chronic esses should be referred to the Charitable Aid committee, whilst the Benevolent Association should only deal with temporary relief oases, whilst it was further coined that at present it would be unwise to allow a benevolent association to clash with the Government Aid, Messrs O. T. lok, W. Pratt, G. Booth, W. M. Maskell, W. Harris, J, P. Jameson, J. G, llawkes, H. W. Packer, O. Ever. W. B. Mitchell, O. P. Halbert and J, T. Brown vrere elected as an acting conmrilteo till April Ard. 1883. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr J. G. Hawke*—“That advertisements be inserted io the various papers soliciting subscriptions.’' Tne Bey. Bather Ginaty moved, and it won agreed—" That the clergy of the various denominations be requested to set aside one Sunday In the year upon which they would make a special appeal on behitlf of the association.’'

A vote of thanks to the chairman terminiited the meeting.
