MELBOURNE, July 10. The Peninsula and Orient Companies’ agent received a telegram this morning stating that European mails will be now conveyed through the Suez Canal by the companies’ steamers, instead of by rail from Suez to Alexandria as in the past. Arrived, this morning—P. and O. steamship Mirzapore, with the English mails via Suez and Brindisi, dated London, Juno 2nd. The police to-day effected the arrest of a man, who is alleged to have broken into premises occupied by Joseph Avinski, in Lonsdale street East, last month, and to have stolen jewellery valued at £ISOO. The breadstuffs market is firmer, John Matheson, late general manager of the Bank of Yictoria, was seized with an epileptic fit to-day and died suddenly. PERTH, July 10. Under the authority of the Secretary of State for the Colonies the Government of Australia will shortly place on the London market a loan of £260,000 for certain public works in this colony.
