[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] AUCKLAND, July 7. The Packer murder case lasted all day, and was adjourned till to-morrow, when Barlow, Clements and an important witness who has turned up will be examined, and the case concluded. The evidence taken to day was that of Mr Cleghorn and hia son, the servant girl, Mrs Austin, Sergeant Green and Dr. Goldsboro. John Smith, landlord of the Exchange Hotel, Auckland, but then in 1876 landlord of the Boyal Oak, Onohunga, gave fresh evidence. He deposed to asking Winiata for money for liquor which he owed him the day before Packer’s murder, and threatened to summon him. Winiata brought in two hours’ time a pound in gold on account. An hour afterwards Packer and Winiata came to the hotel, the former accusing the latter of stealing .£2 i9j from him and _ paying _& I to Smith with part of it. Winiata denied the charge, and they had angry words, and Packer left to lay an information against Winiata. Various witnesses deposed to meeting Winiata early on the morning of the murder in the Bemnera district, and to his looking excited, and to blood being on places under hia left thigh. He was enquiring the road to Orakei, and for a native named Brassey. Brassey was examined, but little osnld be made out of him. his answers being evasive. Though cautioned by the Bench, ha would remember little or nothing ho had said at the coroner’s inquest, but it ho had a week to think of the matter he might possibly remember. Mr Dufaur, counsel for Winiata, did not crossexamine any witnesses.
